I did some research on your 2001 Excursion 4x4 and found the towing capacity for your vehicle with a 5.4L engine is 7,200 maximum trailer weight. That would be the weight of the trailer when it is fully-loaded and ready-to-tow.

For your Excursion I recommend the Curt Class trailer Hitch, part # C14011. This is a Class lV hitch and it has a 2 inch receiver opening.

Since you plan on doing some towing you might be interested in etrailer ball mount kit # 989900. It comes with 2 ball mounts; one with a 3/4 inch rise or 2 inch drop and one with a 2-3/4 inch rise or 4 inch drop. It also includes a 1-7/8 inch ball, 2 inch ball, hitch pin with clip, and a storage bag.

I imagine the trailer has brakes installed so you will need a brake controller in your Excursion and you will also need the trailer wiring to operate the brake controller and lights on the trailer.

The brake controller and plug-in adapter I recommend is part # 90885, and part # 3035-P. You would simply plug one end of the adapter into the back of the brake controller and the other into the brake controller connector that can be found under the dash just to the left of the center console. I have attached a link to an installation video you can check out.

If you have a 4-way connector but do not have a 7-way at the rear of your Excursion, you will need part # ETBC7. This plugs into the 4-way and with additional wiring gives you the 7-way trailer connector you need for the trailer. I have attached a diagram that shows how the ETBC7 wiring is run.

If you do not have a 4-way connector on your Excursion I recommend part # 118344. This harness plugs into the connection points behind the tail lights on your vehicle.

When working with electrical connectors I recommend using dielectric grease like part # 11755. This keeps dirt and moisture out of the electrical connections and helps prevent corrosion.
