How to Replace Factory Brake Controller on 2012 Dodge Ram w/ Tekonsha Prodigy P3 # 90885

Updated 09/16/2015 | Published 09/15/2015

Question:

I need to replace my factory installed brake controller on my 2012 Ram 2500, can this be done or do i need to go back with factory unit? If so will a Prodigy P-3 work with an adapter the would plug into the wires for the factory unit.

You can indeed install an aftermarket brake controller like the Tekonsha Prodigy P3, part # 90195 in your 2012 Dodge Ram 2500, even though it's equipped with the factory controller.

You'll need to unplug the OEM controller from the rear of the unit. You should be able to reach up behind the dash and reach the plug. Once you unplug the unit, the vehicle computer will continue looking for the factory controller, so it'll throw a code/warning on the dash. You'll need to see your Dodge Dealer to have the computer reflashed to get rid of that warning. Once this is done, you can install the Prodigy P3 using the # 3021-P brake controller wiring adapter.

I've edited a photo for you showing where the brake controller connector is located under the dash.
