Will Installing a Trailer Hitch on a 2015 Volkswagen Golf SportWagen Reduce Ground Clearance

Updated 09/09/2015 | Published 09/08/2015

Question:

I bought a 2012 Jetta Sportwagen Hitch from e-trailer a couple of years ago and installed it on the car. The reduced ground clearance resulted in me dragging and scrapping the bottom of the hitch all the time on hills and steep driveways. Is the 2015 Golf Sportwagen Curt Hitch going to have the same problem?

The problem is that you are adding something to the bottom of a vehicle that is low to the ground to begin with. The 2015 Golf is going to be as low if not lower than the Jetta so the potential for the hitch to make contact with the ground on steep grades is still there. With vehicles that are low to the ground there is really no way around this possible issue.

There is a hitch option for the 2015 Volkswagen Golf SportWagen, # C11411. If you plan on doing some towing I the recommended ball mount is # C45521. For a 1-7/8 inch ball use # 19256 and for a 2 inch ball use # 19258 and use # F-4 for the pin and clip.

If you want to use the hitch for an accessory such as a bike rack or cargo carrier then you have to make sure the accessory is rated for use with a Class I trailer hitch. Also, with a bike rack, you are limited to 2 bikes maximum on a Class I hitch.

Curt also says you have to use stabilization strap # 18050 when using this hitch for any non-trailer load (such as a bike rack or cargo carrier) per their warranty requirements.
