Question:
I have a 2011 Toyota 4runner Trail edition and need to tow a boat in about a month and need to figure out what I need. Do I go with a hitch with an adjustable /rise? I have a 2inch X 2 inch Hitch opening that was pre-installed on my 4runner. The bottom of the inside of the 2x2 opening is 17inch off the ground and the top of the opening Inside is 19inch off the ground. I think the metal is about 1/4inch thick I was able to measure the trailer sitting in the garage and the bottom of the ball cup sits at 18inch off the floor and the top rounded portion of the ball receiver seems to be at 19.5inch off the floor. The hitch uses a 1 7/8inch ball I was able to get the following info from my Dad who trailers the boat with his Honda Ridgeline Pickup The hitch is 1-7/8 ball. The mounting height is about 15-1/2 to the top side of the bar where the ball mounts. The height isn’t critical but I do use a hooked bar that gets it down to this level. I did check the trailer too and this height seems good for both the boat and utility trailer Hopefully this will give you enough info to guide me through the world of towing and trailer setups to determine what I need. When looking around I did notice that it might be possible to tow a boat and also use my Thule hitch rack. This might be a cool option for me. I guess I could throw the bike in the boat but having them on the hitch mount might be better and it would also allow me to lug them around without the boat when I get where I am going since dragging around that rack to use after I the boat seems silly since it would take up a ton of space when not being used.

Given the trailer coupler and receiver heights you mentioned, the # D-4 ball mount would be my recommendation. When used in the drop position, the trailer ball would be placed 1 inch below level, which would be perfect for your boat trailer. For a trailer ball, use part # 19260 and the Hitch Pin and Clip, # PC3.
If you were wanting to carry a bike rack as well, using a multipurpose ball mount like the Curt # D210 would be ideal. It provides the same 2 inch drop as the # D-4 mentioned above, as well as providing a receiver for your bike rack.
The entire # D210 has a 7500 lb towing/750 lb tongue weight (maximum amount of downward force that could be safely applied to the hitch) capacity. The receiver portion has a 350 lb tongue weight capacity, which means your bikes plus the rack couldn't weigh more than 350 lbs, which shouldn't be a problem.
