Is the basket compatible with the Thule Stretch Cargo Net or does it require using the straps?

You can certainly use the Thule cargo net # TH692 with cargo basket # TH859XT. The beauty of the cargo net is that you can wrap it around something and hook it to itself if needed so it can just about work on anything. But you shouldn't have that problem on the Trail basket.
