Trailer Hitch Recommendation for 2014 Ford Escape with Hands-Free Lift Gate

Updated 04/02/2015 | Published 04/01/2015

Question:

I have a 2014 Ford Escape with the hands free lift gate. Which hitch would you recommend I use to ensure the lift gate option still works. I only need the hitch for a bike rack. Thank you!

Two sizes and classes of hitch are offered for the 2014 Escape, a 1-1/4-inch Class II and a 2-inch Class III. I have included a link to our main page for hitches for your car where you can select your model from the drop-down menu at the top of the page. I also included links to two articles on hitches that will give you additional information about their capacities.

A 2-inch Class III hitch offers higher capacity than a Class II, so if towing is in your plans or of you already own 2-inch hitch accessories like a bike rack or cargo carrier then you'll want to go for a 2-inch hitch.

You can use either 1-1/4-inch Class II hitch # 36529 or 2-inch Class III hitch # 75758. Both will allow the lift gate sensors to work but with the Class III hitch the sensor areas will be limited to either side of vehicle near the exhaust pipes.

An article on hitch installation is included in case this is a project you'll be doing yourself.

I also linked you to our main pages for both sizes of bikes racks that will work with either hitch size. I also included two articles to help you select a carrier that will fit properly at the back of the vehicle.
These articles will be a great place to start if you are shopping for a rack. If you already own a hitch rack you will want to ensure you choose a hitch that fits it.
