I am buying carpet floor mats as a gift for a friend who owns a VW Jetta sportwagen. I am unsure of the year the car was built. What range of years VW Jetta sport wagen. will your carpet floor mats ?

The Volkswagen Jetta is in its sixth generation, having been in production since 1979. The Sportwagen variant was introduced in the fifth generation.

If you know what your friend's car looks like you might be able to narrow down the model year range by looking on Wikipedia or the Volkwagen website. There are also versions of vehicles of any given model year whose fits with aftermarket parts can vary. Some optional equipment can affect the fit of certain mats, such as VW's Premium Sound option.
