For your 2009 Jeep Liberty we offer the Curt T-Connector Vehicle Wiring Harness, # C56334 as well as the Tow Ready Custom Fit T-One Vehicle Wiring Harness # 118554. Both harnesses require running the 12-volt feed to the vehicle's battery.
In testing, both Curt and Tow Ready have found that the taillights alone on the 2009 Liberty can not support the electrical draw from trailer lights. This is why the black wire must be run to the vehicle battery. With the black wire run to the battery, the wiring harness receives it's power directly from the battery with virtually no power being drawn from the taillights.
If the black wire is not run it could harm the taillight circuit, blow fuses, short out the wiring harness and there is a very good chance that the wiring harness will not function at all.
I have attached an article which gives instruction on how to route the power wire.
