Built-In Controls for Adjustable Power

Hayes Engage Controls and Components

Braking Output

During the initial setup process, use the adjustment buttons on the left front of the Engage controller to adjust the braking output. The output control lets you set the maximum amount of power that will be applied to your trailer's brakes. Typically, the output is only readjusted when you experience changing road conditions or if the weight of your trailer changes. To view the output setting, press either button and release. The output setting will appear as a percentage on the digital display - from 10 to 99. Use the plus and minus buttons to raise or lower the setting in increments of 5.

Power Ramp Time Setting

To adjust how aggressively the trailer brakes activate, press and hold the minus button until the display flashes, then release. The power ramp time (1-5 seconds) will flash. Use the minus button to cycle through the options. If you want to reach maximum power output faster, select a lower number. To get smoother braking action, select a higher number. When the desired ramp time is reached, press the plus button to select it. You can alter the ramp time setting to suit your driving preferences or to improve handling based on changing road conditions or varied trailer loads.

Manual Override

The Hayes Engage keeps the manual override within easy reach on the front of the module, great for stopping sway or controlling your trailer's momentum in emergencies. Push the slide-bar to activate the trailer's brakes and brake lights without you having to apply the brakes on your tow vehicle, perfect for limiting trailer movement while you re cruising.

Quick, Simple Installation

Because inertia plays no role in the functioning of this controller, you do not have to mount the unit at any particular angle. Your mounting options are limitless, so long as you can still easily access the controller and manual override.

If your vehicle already has a plug-in brake controller wiring harness, just connect the unit to it. Otherwise, you will need to purchase a vehicle-specific wiring harness (sold separately) to plug into. If a harness is unavailable for your vehicle, hardwiring will be necessary.

See also etrailer.com's exclusive 7- and 4-way brake control installation kit (ETBC7 - sold separately) if you don't already have a 7-way plug at the back of your vehicle.

Note: If a custom brake control wiring adapter is not available for your vehicle, either a 20-amp or 30-amp circuit breaker (sold separately) may be required for installation.

Time-Delayed Braking

What is time-delayed braking

The Hayes Engage comes equipped with time-delayed braking. Every time you apply the brakes in your vehicle, a signal is sent - via the brake switch - to the Engage. The controller then sends power out to your trailer brakes to activate them with an intensity set by you, at a rate determined by you. Both the amount of braking power (output) and rate of application (power ramp) can be adjusted to suit your preference, the road conditions, the type of trailer, and the weight of your load. To determine which levels are best for your application, test your towing setup and choose what feels right.

81760 Hayes Engage Electric Brake Controller - Time Based

Custom Wiring Adapter for Hayes Brake Controllers - Dual Plug
part number: HA81780-HBC

Install your Hayes electric trailer brake controller quickly and easily with this custom wiring adapter. One end plugs into the controller, and the other plugs into the junction box beneath your vehicle's dash.

Features:

  • Plug-in wiring adapter allows for quick, simple installation of your electric trailer brake controller
  • No cutting or splicing required
    • Custom connector end plugs into the electric junction box beneath the dash of your vehicle
    • Opposite end plugs into the back of your electric brake controller
  • Compatible with time-delayed and proportional brake controllers from Hayes
  • Made in the USA

Installation of Hayes Brake Controller Adapter

To install your Hayes electric brake controller, you need to connect the wiring of the controller to your vehicle. Certain auto manufacturers offer pre-wired options, typically known as tow packages, in which the wiring is run for you from the dash to the trailer connector on the back of your vehicle. Usually when this is done, a port is installed at your dash so that you can easily plug in a brake controller.

Junction BoxBrake-Control Adapter Port

This adapter plugs into the port that is built into the electric junction box underneath your vehicle's dash. The black box is located to the left of the steering column, just above the carpet. To plug in the adapter, first remove the cover on the box. The adapter plugs into the second slot from the left, on the top row.

No hardwiring is required to install this adapter. After you plug it into the factory port, you simply plug the other end of the adapter directly into your electric trailer brake controller. Because there are no wires to connect, installation is not permanent. You can unplug and remove your brake controller at any time to transfer it to another vehicle or securely stow it away.

After one year of use the unit works as advertised but does require some getting used to.When first installed it goes to 25% activation in a total of 5 seconds so I turned it down to 15% and like it better loaded or empty..I prefer a proportional controller over timed but due to shortages at the time of purchase this one has filled the job well..Good price and easy install so will see how long it lasts...

by: Nick 04/10/2024

Easy install and works great. I get all my trailering items from etrailer and have never had an issue.

by: Don 02/06/2024

Great price, no delays, came the same day as promised. You should feel very comfortable dealing with etrailer

by: Susan04/20/2017

Shipment was prompt and I received exactly what I ordered. Super easy to install in my 2005 Dodge Ram 2500 and im a girl. :)

Nissan Titan pulling a fully loaded 14x7 Cargo Mate Blazer enclosed trailer. The unit was pretty easy to install. etrailer included the proper wiring harness for my Titan. It is not difficult to find the proper brake setting for the load size and not hard to tweak on the fly. This unit worked like a charm while hauling this large load about 1000 miles. So far it has been worth every penny and I got it at a great price!

Hyundai Genesis

My Genesis brake contoller s**t the bed. My Genesis was warrantied without a receipt, (thumbs up to Genesis), but did not include the wiring harness. My original Genesis did not have the "Quick Connect". I was going to try to use my original harness, but I did not want to chance burning out a new controller, because I wired something wrong. With the "Quick Connect" harness, your only problem is finding the right connection on your truck. (The harness will ONLY connect to the right position.) The "Quick Connect" harness saves much time and effort over trying to find the correct connections yourself.

by: Troy J07/09/2020

Easy to install as I also ordered the wire adapter kit for my truck. Installation was quick and the unit works as I expected. Good investment for safety. Between the phone help with the ordering of the wire adapter kit and You Tube, it took me longer to watch the videos than it actually took to install it.

by: John 09/16/2022

Good product, easy fitment into factory Ford storage cubby. Small hole in back of cubby made to allow wire harness to pass through.

by: Clayton R.02/09/2015

Hayes trailer brake controller, custom wiring adapter, power cord adapter, andersen camp leveler, trailer leveler. All of these items were delivered in a timely manner and as advertized. Will probably order other items in the future.

by: James06/15/2019

I have not had a chance to use the brake controller yet. I did get it installed today. The installation was easy.
The only thing that I might say is that the set up information was not very clear. It seems like there should be a notation somewhere in the set up about how long the lights are going to flash when there is an OC readout on the unit or how to stop the flashing. Maybe I missed something in the instructions.

by: Brian 10/23/2022

The website was easy to work with. When I needed help I was able to reach someone immediately and they couldn’t be more helpful. The items arrived earlier than expected. Installation was straight forward and works like it should. I would recommend using etrailer for all your towing and trailer needs.

by: Billy J08/12/2022

this is the best for the money you can buy,I deleted one star because the info on color codes as relates to my 2022 gmc makes it difficult to match color codes with the truck. neither kelsey or gm are great at this identification, particuly in terms of battery/ grounds/ signal /trailer brakes/ etc

by: Joseph07/16/2019

I purchased this item, didn’t read enough to know I needed an adaptor to fit my Chevy Silverado. Cut the wires and spliced them into my Chevy pigtail provided. Thought the item was not working. Called in and was told someone would call me back the next day with instructions. As told, a representative call me and advised me that Chevy has a different color code. After a quick change everything was functioning as hoped thank you e trailer

by: Tevis Laspa06/21/2017

This was a replacement purchase. The original failed at 8 years old. The original started flashing the brake lights every 5 seconds while turned off and parked. Every thing fit back in the original spot. I have not tried the function with a trailer on.

by: Richard10/01/2023

Works perfectly! Great service.

by: 09/25/2023

Cable plugged in easy and works correct ly.

by: Mark08/27/2020

It’s easy to adjust to get the brake controls. I have a 26 foot filth wheel camper and it makes it easy to stop in the event of emergency.

by: Kenn07/13/2018

works very well with my 28 ft trailer....easy to install...fit nice in the cuby hole ...with a little mod.... on the lower left side of my dash......looks factory

by: John O.12/24/2015

I love it, I have one in both of my trucks. It works on single & double axle brakes., you can adjust the delay & see what you set it on and don't have to guess what it is on. Very easy to adjust brakes for your loads, there again you can also see what you have it set on also. My neighbor used one of my trucks to haul a load hay & loved it . Asked me to order him one for his truck.

Instructions was very helpful and product worked on a Tow Smart Synchronize trailer brake controller.

by: Steve P.09/10/2017

This controller was so easy, mounting it under the dash, put in the 40 amp fuse. And the controller was ready to go. Install time was less than a hour. That included going to the parts place and getting a fuse. I am very happy

by: Don01/25/2022

Controller working now. Tow vehicle needed fuse to power 12V+ pin on 7 way

by: Nick 12/20/2022

Easy install and works great. No complaints here.

by: Douglas04/22/2019

Happy with the service I get from etrailer, and the fantastic selection of products. I spoke with both Paula S. and Odelia K. and they were very helpful and knowledgeable, and courteous. I am a kind of "old school" consumer and I like that you provide excellent phone support.
One thing that would be helpful would be a mention right on the product web pages about why there are two seemingly identical listings for each product. Odelia said once one sends a product to the checkout basket then one is given reason for the two choices. It would be less confusing to have that reason in the preceding pages.
Speaking of old school, this is the first time in my long life that I have installed a trailer brake controller and trailer light wiring without having to splice or cut anything. "New school" does have its advantages!
Great store, thank you!
