If you need extra storage without the look of an over-the-rail, crossover toolbox, the chest style is a perfect solution. Much like standard toolboxes, the chest will sit flush against the front of the truck bed while the notched shape allows it to fit around the wheel well, freeing up more space in the truck bed. As two super-duty lift cylinders raise and lower the lid, an offset hinge allows the insulated beveled lid to open up to 90 degrees without coming into contact with the cab.

Video Transcript for UWS Offset Lid Wedge Series Truck Bed Chest Review

What's up, everybody It's AJ with etrailer.com. Today, we're gonna be checking out this UWS Truck Bed Chest. So it's gonna sit in the bed of your truck and help you organize your tools and keep 'em locked up when you're not around. Let's check it out. Take a look at how it sits in the truck bed. Again, it doesn't go on the truck bed rails like some other crossover tool boxes.

This one's gonna sit in there and the lid's actually offset as well. So that means that the lid doesn't go all the way to the back or the front of your truck bed here. It's offset. From this angle you can see a little bit better what I'm talking about, how the lid's shifted over a little bit. There is still some box down here, but it doesn't go right here because then if you went to go open it, it wouldn't work.

But because it's offset and I pull the latch it's got enough space in between the bed and the lid for it to open and not mess with the box at all. You open the toolbox on either side with the latch. So just pull here on the passenger side opens just the same. You see there on the driver's side, that one actually locks. If you lock it, neither side will work.

That way you can keep all your tools locked up. Some things we ran into with the tool chest is since it sits in the bed, we we're wanting to really try it with some Tonneau covers and we did, but it didn't quite work out like we expected. Now every Tonneau cover and truck are a little bit different but I'm gonna give you some things to look out for. So the rails on the side stuck out a little bit so that you couldn't get the box into place in the truck beds we we're using it for, or it would slide under those rails, but then you couldn't open up the lid. So you go to pull the latch and the lid would just hit those rails.

So it wouldn't be able to fully open. So that was kind of an issue. I think it also would work pretty well if you had a ladder rack system on there 'cause those would be here on the bed rails and out of the way. Otherwise you couldn't use a crossover style up here if the ladder rack foot was here. But the ladder rack foot would fit here just fine with this box being in the bed. Looking at the inside, I'll pull on the latch and see that both them are moving in unison. That's because the rod that connects them there in middle and then the thing I like is it's got this shield here protecting that rod. So if you we're kind of carelessly, just throwing tools in there or not really looking what you're doing, you wouldn't have to worry about any the tools bouncing around or damaging that rod which would make them work independently. Looking at the inside of the toolbox. You're gonna have 11 cubic feet of space to work with. So that's gonna take quite a lot of tools. You see, we put some things in here and there's still space to spare. It even fits a five gallon bucket set into place right here and it closes just fine. Some of the other tool boxes like the crossover style, don't go deep enough to be able to put those buckets in there. So that's a nice thing just to show you visually that you can stack stuff pretty high and still close it. One of the things I like is this ledge here on the side. Not only for setting things down on top of, but it's kind of a protected spot for the strut here. Some of the other boxes, the crossover style, they don't have a protected spot so sometimes you can put a bucket or something over here that's too tall and when you go to close the lid, the strut might hit that. I know the crossover ones have some screwdriver holders. And if you put any screwdrivers in that backside it is gonna make contact. This, you don't have to worry about that. Just don't stack anything too much on this ledge. I kind like that it has its own section here on the side of the box so I don't have to worry about closing it on anything when I do go slam the lid. On either side of the lid is one of the struts and that's what's gonna help that lid pop up so quickly. Just pull on the latch, goes right up, no issues. I like that you can replace it if you we're to accidentally stack something too high and close it on there and damage it. You just measure from eyelet to eyelet, which is usually about 10 inches or is about 10 inches on this one. And you look at the side and it'll say the force pounds. So this one's gonna be 45 force pounds. So you can easily replace one of these to keep that lid working like new if there is some kind of issue or damage. Looking up here at the top of the lid is gonna be the striker. So that comes down on the latch and holds that lid in place. Another thing I like is that you can adjust it. So if you loosen either one of these and slide it back and forth that way, if you slam it over time, it moves or bends outta the way or just something doesn't seem like it latches right you can't adjust it to get it closing like new again. Looking around the edge of the lid, you're gonna have this foam weather seal. The lid's also injected with foam so it's not only gonna help it keep its structure but insulate the box too. So I like that it holds that structure. It's not just a hollow lid that you just throw something heavy up on top, it's gonna be easily damaged or dented. Sure, there'll still be some dents but you don't have to worry about it collapsing in. Sticking with the lid if we look at the outside, it does have an overhang. So I like when you shut the lid down it's gonna go and it's not gonna stop right here at the top of the box, push it down, it goes over quite a bit more. And I like that because it's gonna be harder for the elements to get up and into the box. Looking at the box, it's gonna be black powder coat aluminum. It's gonna be a glossy black so it is gonna have a little bit of shine to it. I usually like the matte black better just 'cause I feel like it hides scratches and dents, but this still looks nice in the back of this truck and it's still gonna hold up. The way the chest mounts in the truck bed is a little bit different. Usually when it's the crossover style, it goes and hooks onto the bed rail. But since this one sits in the bed, you have to get that mounting hardware separately, but also be careful to check out underneath your truck 'cause you have to drill through the box and the truck to get that installed. So make sure you check out wherever you wanna put your box, there's nothing in the way underneath. Going over some measurements here on the box, it's gonna be 60 inches long. It's gonna be 20 inches wide. And it's gonna be 19 inches tall. Looking at the base, it's gonna be 48 inches long. It's gonna be 10 inches tall. And then you can also see the gaps here in the side are nice because you can access the tie down points as well. So there is space over here to get your hands in there to tie stuff down if you still need to do that. Overall, I like the tool chest. You know, it's a different design than the crossover ones. I do like the crossover ones because they sit up on the bed rails and have that gap underneath so I can still throw a ladder in here and it doesn't sacrifice the whole bed. But this is a pretty big truck bed here. You can still put the ladder in, maybe lean it up on the tailgate. This one still gives you access to the tie down points on the side so if that's something you use all the time that's very nice too. The only thing I would say is maybe if you're used to using it a whole bunch, you want something level up here to dump the tools in. Or if you like the weather guard approach where it has the button on the side it's not gonna quite work with it being down here with these latches. But if you got a crossover one that had that button you could hit that it would pop up. It'd be right there and able to use. Otherwise though, I like this as a storage device, you know, putting your tools in there, lock 'em up, keeping it organized. Cause even if it is just a few or you don't have it full to the brim, at least you're not scattered around the whole truck bed loose. It's all in here, locked up so nobody can mess with it. Well, I think that does it. Thanks for hanging out. I hope this helped..

Well constructed. Great customer service, great price and fast shipping. 2019 Toyota Tundra Crew Max. Looks right at home.

No surprises, this product was exactly as promised. Unit sits just below bed-rail height, perfect for 5th Wheels. Also makes it out of view for most part, although it looks great. Has remained water-tight through winter road trips and lots of space for all that stuff we carry 'just in case'.

by:

Excellent tool box and surprisingly durable, would purchase a second one but this one has more than enough storage space for a carry along tool box, all your fluids, straps, tire chains, and some other stuff??

by:

Toolbox arrived in a reasonable amount of time and was everything was as expected. I drilled my own holes to secure the toolbox to the bed of the truck, nice and clean look hidden from view about the bed.

Great box, good quality! Replaced an over the rail box to accommodate a ladder rack.
