Video Transcript for Replacement Head for Blue Ox SwayPro Weight Distribution Systems Review

Hi there. I'm Michael with etrailer.com. Today we're gonna take a quick look at this Blue Ox replacement weight distribution head for your Sway Pro systems. This is going to replace the original weight distribution head for your Blue Ox Sway Pro weight distribution system, with the rotating lift brackets. This head is going to work for your older models of the Sway Pro that use the pinless auto latch to secure the spring bars to the head. If you're replacing a head, assembly that uses a pin and clip to secure the spring bars, you are gonna need the part number that you see on the screen there, so that you can reuse your original hardware, and get your spring bar secured.

Another thing to note is that this is not going to work with systems that are designed to be used on trailers with the bottom-mounted coupler. So if your original system is designed for those bottom-mounted couplers, the tilt is not gonna be correct for this head, so you will need a different head for that. But as long as you're needing the replacement head for that original older model of Sway Pro that uses that pinless auto latch, and your system is designed for your top-mounted couplers, this is gonna work really well for you. It's a direct replacement from Blue Ox, so you're not gonna have to worry about compatibility issues or anything like that. It's gonna do a great job of allowing you to have that nice smooth ride using your weight distribution.

Again, the mounting hardware is not included, you will need to reuse the original fasteners to get this mounted in place, but if you are needing just to replace that original head unit, this is gonna be exactly what you need. That completes our look for today. Again, I'm Michael with etrailer.com. Thanks for watching..

Blue Ox products are built like a brick outhouse. Super heavy duty. Had to buy this head because I went from an underslung (bottom mounted) to standard hitch ball mount on my toy hauler (welded to the top). The heads have slightly different angles which puts different tension on the trunnions. Works great. Hardest part of the head swap is finding a torque wrench large enough to install the hitch ball at 250 lb-ft.

This is an absolutely wonderful piece of engineering. Sway pro is the best in my opinion. Does exactly what is is supposed to do. I've used it on two trailers for 5 years, I'm sold.

I purchased a Blue Ox SwayPro Weight Distribution System w/ Sway Control - Clamp On - Underslung - 20K GTW, 2,000 lbs. of tongue weight - BXW2003. The problem is that my coupler is welded to the top of the tongue frame of the trailer or an Overslung design. The problem this caused was hooking and unhooking the trailer was very hard, the hitch ball didn’t want to drop down onto the hitch ball. I would move the truck forward/back it up, raise and lower the trailer jack to install the coupler, or uninstall the coupler. The reason was that the hitch head and the bar pivot tubes are both at a 7 degree tilt. So the coupler wants to just drop straight down onto the hitch ball, whereas the hitch ball was expecting an approach at a 7 degree angle from the coupler. This caused a slight miss alignment between the two important pieces of the whole tow setup. These problems were worse when uncoupling the trailer for the same reason. Before this problem I never heard of an Underslung coupler, they are not the industry standard and there are very few trailer manufacturers that utilize that style of coupler. In making phone calls no one knows why the design is used or what advantages they have or even why it’s used. No one can explain if there is an advantage to the Underslung design.

Luckily etrailer sells a replacement hitch head of an Overslung design, which converts the Underslung tow setup into an Overslung tow arrangement. This hitch head uses the older design where the spring bar slides into the bar pivots tubes until the pinless auto-latch pins to snap into the spring bar and closes and locks them in place. This secures the spring bars into the bar pivot tube that is a part of the hitch head.
Since I was able to tow the trailer with a lot of time and effort to make the necessary hitch connections work, I had a working system, which means I had all the parts of the system. So by just replacing the hitch head, I was able to convert from an Underslung into an Overslung tow system.
All I need now is someone with a torque wrench that goes to 450 ft./lbs. to reattach the old hitch ball onto the new replacement hitch head. I did purchase a torque wrench that goes to 250 ft./lbs. those are common and easily available at most stores to bolt the hitch head onto the shank. Everything involved in towing requires larger than normal tool sizes, I bought a 2 inch open end wrench as part of a set thinking I would never use anything that big, but that’s the required wrench for the top of the 2-5/16 hitch ball. The bottom hitch ball nut required a 1-7/8 thin wall socket.

This hitch has been outstanding
Thank
you for a great product

by:

Old hitch was stolen. This is a direct fit replacement.

by:

Great product, exactly what I needed at a reasonable price. company with excellent shipping times. Love doing business with etrailer!

by:

This is worth the money!! Combined with the 20,000 rated “L” , best setup for pulling!! It’s solid!! Unlike Reese, that has that upper channel for the head to move?? I didn’t like that! Blu ox is a stout hitch! My only minor complaint would be the small clips that hold the tension bars in place. I had 1 of them snap off.

by:

Exactly what I needed!

by:

This has been the best hitch.
Thank
you.

This hitch has been the best overall

by:

Just what I ordered with Kathy’s help. I ask some questions and she answered all of them she was a lot of help and I appreciate it.

by:

Excellent experience and ordering.

by:

Accurate to what I ordered, received in timely manner and it matches the other parts I have on hand to set up my knew tow vehicle. I am sold on the Blue Ox, Sway Pro system as it improved on overall handling of my Airstream when towed by my 2500 ... practically eliminated any handling issues so I'm looking forward for same outcome with my new 3500 RAM.
Thanks, it all worked out well.

by:
