Video Transcript for BAKFlip MX4 Hard Tonneau Cover Installation - 2018 Toyota Tundra

Speaker 1: Today on this 2018 Toyota Tundra, we'll be having a look at and showing you how to install the BAKFlip MX4 hard tonneau cover, part number BAK48409.Here's what our tonneau cover looks like installed. Now the main reason you're going to want a tonneau cover like this one, is that it'll help protect the contents of your truck bed from the elements. And when you combine it with a locking tailgate such as this one, you can help protect it from theft and tampering as well. This cover has a nice sleek profile that matches the bed of our truck. The tonneau cover has a nice lightweight, but yet still sturdy aluminum construction. And also has a nice matte black powder coat finish. Now unlike soft tonneau covers this one with its half inch thick aluminum panels, is rated to support up to 400 pounds of evenly distributed weight.

Not only is the tonneau cover itself aluminum, but so are the mounting rails. And by being aluminum that means we don't have to worry about rust occurring on down the road.Opposed to other tonneau covers out there, especially soft ones that attach via snaps. This one is super easy to use and to get in fully open position. We'll simply open our tailgate. With our tailgate open, we can now pull down on the cable to release the latch and flip it forward.

We'll pull down on the latch on the second panel as well and flip it forward again. If we have a tall item and we want to put it in the bed of our truck, but yet still be able to see out of our back window. We can easily store the tonneau cover in the halfway open position. We'll undo our buckle. Move it forward and buckle it in this location. We'll do the same on both sides.

With it buckled, you can't pull it open. So it'll stay secure in this position as we're driving. If we need full bed access to our truck, that's not a problem. We'll undo our cable to release the latch, lift up. Before we rest it against the cab of our truck, you'll see that there are padded sections to protect our back window and the paint on our truck. We'll now unclip our prop rod.

We'll slide it into this slot here. Loosen the but, pull down, tighten the nut and this will keep our tonneau cover from going back down into our bed. We'll do the same on both sides. With it in its fully opened position, you can see we have full truck bed access now. Our rails only stick out about an inch and a half from the side of our bed side cab here to the end of the rail. Each one of our rails does have an included drain to help get any water out from the rails and not into the bed of your truck. This tonneau cover and the rails have multiple rubber seals to help prevent any moisture from getting inside the bed of the truck when its in the closed position. This will help keep your contents dry.Now if you ever need to remove your tonneau cover, it's not a big deal. We can easily remove it with a simple 9/16 socket. Also, it doesn't interfere with any of our attachment points for our cargo tie downs either. We still have full access to all four of our tie down locations in this truck.Unlike some other tonneau covers out there, with our tonneau cover fully down, we can still close our tailgate. This tonneau cover is also compatible with the BAKBox 2 collapsible truck bed tool box, part number BAK92401 on our website. Now when we directly compare this to another tonneau cover that's very similar the Extang solid fold 2.0. This is a little bit more durable option because it's constructed of aluminum, whereas the Extang has a plastic construction for the top of it. Now that we've gone over some features, we'll show you how to get it installed. To begin our install, we went ahead and laid out our parts in the area that we're going to be working. So we have our rails on each side of the truck. And we went ahead and cleaned off our bulkhead on the front of our bed with some rubbing alcohol. Now we'll take our weather seal and we'll peal off one end of it a little bit. We'll apply it on top of our bulkhead right up against our factory bed rail caps. If you have a plastic drop in bed liner, you don't need to install this. But since we don't, we'll be using it. As we get to the end of it, we'll cut off the excess using a utility knife or a pair of scissors. Now we'll take our rail with our tailgate closed. We'll set it on top of our bed side and we'll slide it as far forward as possible. Now we'll take our front clamp and we'll install it into position, about six to nine inches back from the front of the rail. It'll fit into those grooves on the rail and we'll tighten it down. Now we'll install our second clamp, which will go in the middle of our rail system. And right about where our prop rod clips into is the middle. So you can use that as a guide. Now we'll place on our third clamp, the one that's closest to our tailgate. And we'll do that again about six to nine inches from the tailgate. Now we'll torque these to the amount specified in the instructions. And repeat the same process for the other side of the truck. Now we have our tonneau cover on our tailgate. We have our tailgate in facing up, so it'll fold down towards our tailgate. First, we're going to lift up our tonneau cover with an extra set of hands and bring it towards the front of our vehicle. Okay now with it placed onto our rails, we'll fold back the first section here. Just let it sit. Now we'll unfold our very front section. And we need to slide it forward a little bit.So we'll fold back our back section here and we'll slide it all forward. Now that we have our cover in about the right orientation. We'll flip up on the front edge here and we'll take these spacers and go through the two pre-drilled holes. Then we'll take our buckle, set it over those, and we'll screw the buckle into the spacers. Mae sure you use a screwdriver for this and not a power drill. You don't need to go super tight, just secure. And we'll do this on both sides of the cover. Now we'll take our bolt and one of our rubber washers and we'll drop that to the hole in the top of our tonneau cover. Until it goes through our side rail bracket. Underneath, we'll place on another rubber washer, a flat washer, a lock washer, and then we'll thread on our wheel. We'll do the same on the other side.We checked our alignment, making sure we had equal distance between our rails and the tailgate on both sides of the truck. And that it was sitting properly on our front seal. Once we ensure those sitting properly, we tightened the adjustment knobs down. Now we'll install our bumpers on the section of our panel where it'll rest against our back window. Now we'll take our drain tube and we'll stick it on the drain on our side of our rails. Now the other end you need to get outside of the truck bed somehow. There's a grommet that resides right in this area here. You can drill a hole through this and run the tube through it. But since our truck has a bed rug, we just removed our grommet and we cut a small slit where the grommet was in the bed rug. And we'll just stick the other end of the drain through it and we'll just stick that outside the bed of the truck, and that'll drain any water out. We'll do this on both sides. That completes our look at and showing you how to install the BAKFlip MX4 hard tonneau cover, part number BAK48409 on this 2018 Toyota Tundra.

I have been using this cover for almost a year now, and am very pleased with it. It looks and fits great, and it is secure and keeps most of the bed dry in the rain. A couple of rubber trip bits have needed some improved securing, and I used a little RTV so it was easy. I drove it across the country round trip last summer and it was perfect. I would recommend this cover for a great-looking and pretty secure cover. Finally, it is easy to fold forward when it is time to haul loads taller than the bed rails.

by:

I have owned this cover for over a year and it has been excellent. It keeps the bed fairly dry as expected and I have had no mechanical issues with it as it still performs like new. I would say the only improvement I would suggest is better foam weather striping for the front of the bed as the original never stuck to the spray in liner very well and eventually came lose and then I just swapped with some similar weather striping I bought locally.

by:

The cover functions ok. The tailgate leaks quite a bit. The manufactured edges that where cut were sharp and not painted or treated. The weather strip along the edges has already discolored/faded. Disappointed in the fading and less than ideal sharp edges. Somewhat expected leaks, but not this much. Average at best rating, especially for the price.

Cover went on easy and looks good on the truck. We put it on our 2020 Colorado which we tow with our motor home. It works great for extra secured storage. The only problem was with the rubber bumpers on the bottom and the two on top , fell off as soon as I opened the box. Not a big deal just had to use a little gorilla glue on them and all has been good.

Overall, I am very pleased with my BAKFlip MX4. It has held up well after 1 year. It works well and looks good. It matches my matte black accessories and trim. It was fairly easy to assemble but I did have some tight fitment issues near the cab where the cover connects to the rail. I really like the security of the hardtop and access through the tailgate. Water is generally kept out, but sometimes there are water drips near the tailgate depending on the angle parked. So this cover keeps the bed *mostly* dry.
etrailer was very fast to deliver my cover, and it came in good condition.

by:

So after a year I am still loving this bed cover. Had the fiberglass version for my 2013 F-150 and loved it as well, that's why I purchased this one for my 2019 Super Duty, it was also the first accessory I purchased for it because I was so used to my other one and knew I couldn't live without it. I never installed the drain tubes on either covers and still haven't had water get it my bed. Also the folks at etrailer are always awesome! Thanks again!

by:

Well made cover. A lot sturdier than I thought it would. Its not full proof so water does get in the bed but it's minimal. The cover partially blocked my tool box which sit in the bed, so I removed the tool box cover for easy access.

Purchased this BAKFlip for my new 22 RAM Classic 1500. Installation went well, instructions were good to follow, and it fit perfectly. One of the plastic hold down clips had a manufacturer defect with excess plastic mold residue inside the clip that prevented it from properly working. I sent an online warranty claim explaining the problem, and a new clip was sent to me in a reasonable amount of time, and it worked fine. After one year of using the cover, I am very happy with it. Everything functions as it should, and it is very versatile. While it is not 100% watertight, I mostly notice a small amount of leakage around the tailgate seal after washing the truck. Under normal rainy weather, there is no leakage, and we get plenty of rain in the PNW. My four-star rating rather than a 5 star is only because of the manufacturer defect and the curling of one of the rubber cushions on the underside of one of the panels where the adhesive holding it on the edges has not held up under the hot weather (with the black color, when the sun beats down on the cover it gets pretty toasty inside the truck bed with the cover closed). I am thinking that should be an easy fix by applying some good adhesive and taping in place until the adhesive cures. Just haven't gotten around to doing it. Again, really like this cover. Would recommend it to others, and if I ever have a need for one in the future, would definitely not hesitate getting another BAKflip.

I installed the BAKFlip MX4 in my RAM 2500 Crewcab has the 6' 1/2 short bed, drived 300 miles now. good product, open and close the tailgate without lifting up the cover

by:

Easy to install. Doesn't leak. Easy to clean, and seems to have improved my fuel mileage a bit. I am happy and would highly recommend this cover. Fits my 2018 Silverado perfectly.

by:

I am a huge fan of the BAKFlip. The installation was pretty straight forward and easy. Anybody with moderate mechanical ability can install. I think it took less than 2 hours. I live in a heavy snow area and had more than 24” of snow on it at one point and the product performed flawlessly.

by:

Overall satisfied with it. However, the end caps get loose and we lost one within a month. I contacted BAK manfufacturer but have not heard from them. Rather poor service.
Other than that, the only other problem is that the middle hinge often closes with misaligned plastic piece, easy to spot (hinge is buckling) and press the piece into the the rail.

by:

the bedcover finally came in.
Few pictures
of it installed.

by:

This tonneau cover can be installed by one person. It works great. It is water proof in the rain.

by:

I really love the bakFlip cover. It locks up all my stuff when we are on the road. I really like the looks too.

by:

After a year of using the cover I found that there are a few things that could be improved and you can do some of these yourself.
The knobs for the cover that actually hold it into the bed-vibrate loose. I added my own lock washers. The poles that you use to hold the cover up when the cover is raised up against the back window-they also vibrate loose-so often that I just removed them and keep them under my seat. The little u-clip pole holders for the poles when not in use-they are too weak-often letting the poles jump out or fall out during normal road driving.
The cover itself is not waterproof --it sheds water away mostly however enough gets into the bed that you can not trust your items to be dry. Bag important stuff to keep it dry.
The rear weather seal slides back and forth too easily--sometimes working itself out about 2 inches until you see it and slide it back into place--i addenda small amount of silicone to stop this from moving.
The cover is strong, looks good and is mostly what I was looking for. Unfortunately I would not buy this again-even more because you have to relocate the bed accessory rails-which then limits the items you can buy for your truck because they are designed for the rails to be in the factory positions.
My next cover will be a roll up so that it allows visibility out of the back window. When this cover is flipped up to its final position it completely blocks the rear window. When I was looking at covers-my thought was well its the coolest looking cover and I can deal with not seeing out the back window--well that has changed. It is not practical. The price is high and there are many other options out there that are. My soft roll up tonneau cover was great-waterproof and I could have bought 6 of them for this price. If one was damaged it would have been better to just throw it away and order a replacement. Sorry guys-look elsewhere for a better cover.

by:

Solid performance. Only issue is with the glue holding the pads is failing

by:

Love the MX4 ...Took a little longer to install but looks great...

by:

This is the third MX4 that I have owned. This one is on Ford’s Maverick. The first two fit well but not perfect. I don’t really know if the slight issues were the fault of the truck or the cover. This cover is the best yet. Absolutely no leaks!! The fit to the tailgate is very uniform!! When ever I need a cover, I don’t even look at te competition. These are great covers.

by:

I've had the cover for one year now and the cover has gone through the worst California winter weather for the last 3o years. It kept my stuff 99% dry! It's not 100% leakproof and that was expected but given the conditions esp during rainy season, it has performed above expectations.

by:

It's a straight forward assembly but photos of the assembly steps would be better than the illustrations.
NOTE: This model allows you to open and close the tailgate without lifting up the cover. The other models require you to lift the cover so the tailgate won't damage it.

by:

I love the cover, very sturdy and has held up very nice for 1 year. The one issue is, I have a long bed Ram and when I fold it up against the cab, it covers the camera for the bed. This is a design flaw and if you use the bed camera when you have a load in the bed and the cover is folded all the way up, you can't use it.

by:

this was easy to put on, no problem.
you
can see in the picture it looks great on my gmc canyon!

by:

This is the second BAKFlip i've owned they vare great, going thru etrailer is an easy process
