Note: To determine whether you can use snow chains on your vehicle, or if they might affect your ABS/EPS functionality, consult your owner's manual.

The Brenta-C 4x4 chains are great winter-weather chains. If you live in an area where you're likely to get periodic snow and ice, these pewag chains are perfect because they're durable and easy to mount. If you're more likely to see seriously icy conditions, you may want a chain with V-bar links that can really bite into the ice to give you maximum traction.

These chains are among the easiest and fastest to install because they have built-in tensioners that you can just pull taut to adjust the fit. These tensioners allow the chains to fit your tires, no matter the profile or wear pattern. And because the tensioners are built-in, you never have to worry about losing them like you might with other chains on the market.

Class S Designation

SAE Class S tire chains are designed for use on passenger vehicles with restricted wheel-well clearance. Most newer cars, vans, and small trucks - especially those with large aftermarket tires - will require Class S chains. If you're unsure about the class of your vehicle, consult your vehicle's owner's manual.

SAE Class S Clearance Diagram

These chains will fit your tires provided there is both:

  • A - a minimum of 1.46" (37 mm) between the top of the tire tread and the wheel well
  • B - at least 0.59" (15 mm) between the tire's sidewall and the vehicle

Confirming Your Fit

If you know your tire size, you may think you won't need to test fit your new chains. But there are a lot of variables that can affect whether chains will fit your specific tires, including your tire type, the amount of air pressure in the tire, the amount of tread wear, and the tire manufacturer. You'll also need to know how much clearance is in your wheel well, which you can determine by measuring from your tire tread to the sidewall of the wheel well.

We recommend that you order chains as early in the season as possible to give yourself plenty of time to test fit the chains and reorder if needed. This way, you won't be stuck out in the cold later with snow chains that don't fit.

You can test fit these chains in your garage or driveway, but you'll want to wait until there's snow on the ground to actually drive with them. Likewise, if you're out in the snow and come across bare pavement, you'll want to pull over and remove the chains. Even low-profile chains can cause damage to the bare pavement, your garage floor, or your vehicle if they break from the wear of riding on a harsh surface.

Installing Snow Chains

Installing these chains is incredibly simple.

Lay chains on the ground to get all the tangles out

1. Lay out the chains on the ground to make sure there are no twists or kinks.

Connect the ends of the chain

2. Slide the chain behind the tire and connect the ends of the black cable, which will sit behind the tire.

Connect the hook and link in front of the tire

3. Around front, connect the red hook to the red link at the top of the tire.

Feed tensioning chain through clip

4. At the bottom of the tire, feed the red tensioning chain through the red clip and tug it until it's tight. Then stretch the hook across the tire. The hook should face away from your tire so your wheel won't get scratched.

Quick Tips:

  • Lengthen the life of snow chains by drying them after each use before you store them.
  • Check out our installation kit with safety lights and a kneeling pad (PO34FRK) to make things a little easier when you're installing chains out in the snow.

How to Choose Snow Chains for Your Vehicle

To choose the right snow chain, you must match your tire size. Those measurements can be found on the side of your tire.

Tire size on sidewall

185/60-15

  1. (185) - indicates tire width in millimeters
  2. (60) - gives you the aspect ratio (sidewall height as percentage of width)
  3. (15) - denotes the diameter of the wheel rim in inches

Finally found the time to do a dry fit. The chains appear to fit well. These chains are for a 3/4 ton diesel truck. I'm a little concerned about some of the perimeter chain links on the outside face of the chain installation. These are used to set the final tension of the chain. There are several that are not welded. Not sure how strong the steel is for those links, but am concerned that under load, the links could open up in some situations releasing the tensioning. Must not be a problem due to other good reviews, but I will have to keep an eye on those links if I ever put those chains into service.

by:

One thing to remember, when putting on or off the chains make sure the free red chain with the bungee and hook at its end is clear. Ideally the whole thing should face you. Do not yank the chain quickly either putting it on or off. If you do that red chain may flip up and the bungee hook around a brake line. If it does you will need to go under the vehicle to unhook it.

Once you figure your way around that mistake, they go on/off as you might expect.

as advertised! I am disabled and being cold is not an option for me. after watching a video on youtube and reading the instructions ( pictures included) i installed these chains in 4 mins BOTH SIDES.
first time iv been off the ranch in 6 days! I have a 2007 kia sportage with goodrich 215/70/R16 allterrain tires and couldnt get traction because of the snow over ice condictions on steep hills.
no problem now! couldnt believe how easy they r to install and they never slipped once!! I would also recomend these for seniors and younger drivers ( they r that easy to install)!

  • Are Pewag Brenta-C Snow Tire Chains PWXMR81V Model Brenta-C 4 x4
The pewag Brenta C Tire Chains # PWXMR81V are the model Brenta-C 4 x4; these are the XMR81V which are the same thing they are just called the Brenta-C by pewag now. So same model, different name. I checked the pewag site and the # PWXMR81V do fit a 265/70-16, and you are correct they do have a 4.5 mm link thickness.

  • What Works Better Snow Chains Or Snow Cables On A 2007 Nissan Frontier 4X4
Both of the snow chains and snow cables will work great in snow conditions. The difference is the snow chains will give you better grip in more ice conditions because the chain links will bite into the ice where as the snow cables tend to slide over the ice. The snow chains will make a little more noise on dry pavement as compared to the snow cables. The Pewag Tire Chains, # PWXMR81V, you have referenced is a good choice for snow chains on your 2007 Nissan Frontier 4x4. Another good choice...

For the tire size of 31x10.5x15 that you have on your 1992 GMC Jimmy that will only be used for plowing snow I would recommend the pewag Brenta-C chains part # PWXMR81V which are going to provide excellent traction in deep snow, are made from harder materials so they will last longer, and are easier to install than other options.

For your 2022 Mercedes Benz Sprinter 2500 with the tire size of LT245/75R16 the easiest to install and most durable tire chain set available is the Konig Easy Fit Chains part # TH04115255 which installs in a matter of seconds (not an exaggeration), and is made from harder steel than other options so it lasts longer as well. It also provides excellent traction as well.

  • How to Pick out Tire Chains for a 2007 Hyundai Accent
First thing I will need in order to recommend you a set of chains is the size listed on the side of your tires. The size will most likely look like P175/40R14. You also will need to check your owners manual to determine if there are any restrictions on running chains on your vehicle. I attached a couple FAQ articles on tire chains for you to check out as well as a link to a page that will take you to a form where you can select your tire size and see what chains will fit your setup.

  • Tire Chain Recommendation for a 2001 Chevy Tahoe with 245/75-16 Tires
First, you will want to consult the vehicle owners manual for the 2001 Chevy Tahoe to determine if chains can be used and if there are any specific requirements if you can use chains. Typically, on 4-wheel drive vehicles, you would place the chains on the rear wheels. If 4-wheel drive is engaged, you can use them on all 4 wheels. I show that your Tahoe uses 245/76-16 size tires. If this is the case, I recommend the Konig self-tensioning chains, # TH2004705255. These chains are better suited...

  • Tire Chain Comparison for Use on 2007 Chevrolet Silverado Classic 3/4-Ton Diesel
The tire size we show as standard on the 2007 Chevrolet Silverado Classic is 245/70-17. For this tire size the Konig chains you referenced, K-Summit Diamond Pattern chains # TH02230K77, are a compatible fit. However, please note that the other chains referenced, the Pewag Brenta-C 4X4 Snow Tire Chains # PWXMR81V, are not a fit for 245/70-17 tires. When it comes to tire chains the auto maker gets the final word on what is compatible and safe. My suggestion is to review your owner's manual...

  • Where To Install Snow Tire Chains On A 2010 Nissan Frontier SE 4x4
The basic rule for snow tire chains on a four wheel drive is that you can use them on all 4 wheels, unless noted in the owners manual that it is not allowed. If using snow tire chains on only 2 wheels, on a four wheel drive vehicle, you will install them on the rear wheels. The reason they might not recommend snow chains on the front is because of clearance issues. I cannot recommend snow tire chains on all 4 wheels if the owners manual says to only use on rear wheels. You might check...

  • Chains vs Cables for 2014 Dodge Ram 3500 4-Wheel Drive Pick Up Truck with LT275/70-R18 Tires
I recommend chains because they will have superior traction in snow and grip on ice. Cables and/or rollers have good traction in light snow and a relatively smooth ride. The Pewag # PWXMR81V you referenced will only work with 185/60-R15 size tires. The one I recommend is the diamond pattern Titan chain # TC2533. The diamond pattern will offer more tire coverage. The square link type will have squared edges providing more "bite". The ride is a little rougher versus others. I would check...
