How's it going, neighbors This is Ed here with etrailer.com and we're taking a look at the TrekStep truck step from Bestop. The TrekStep is super easy to install regardless of what model you go with. In the shop today, we have a Ford F-150, but there's models for Toyotas, Chevys, and Ram. Essentially, the installation is the same across the board with a few variations as far as the width of the pad, the step plate rather, or the way that the arm comes out. You definitely wanna check our fit guide or call our expert customer service and they'll be able to help guide you to the specific fit. So now let's take a look at the things that are gonna be universal across whichever model.
The TrekStep can support up to 300 pounds of weight, so it helps you get your foot up to your bumper so you can hop into your bed a lot easier. That's universal across the board as far as your weight capacity. Another cool feature is the fact that you can adjust where you position the step itself. If you want it to point out a little bit more or in a little bit more, you can make that adjustment upon installation. Let's get into some of the similarities that you're gonna find across the board with the TrekStep regardless of what truck you have.
As far as your step plate itself, that's gonna be the same extruded aluminum. Essentially, it's textured, so it gives you additional traction when it's ice, snow, mud, whatever, and it's made from extruded aluminum. What extruded aluminum is gonna do in this case is make it more rigid and firm since that is the point of contact that you're gonna step on and it's built for the abuse. As far as the linkage system, that's made from cast aluminum that's gonna also provide a lot of strength as well as corrosion resistance. Based on the fact it's under your vehicle, that's where it's gonna get a lot of abuse.
So being made of aluminum, that's gonna help a lot. One of the things that is super cool about adding a step is because it reduces the amount of space that you need to step up to get to the bed of your truck. So in this particular setup, we're about 13 1/2 inches. If you compare that to your bumper step, you would have to step up 21 inches in order to get up here and you have a much shorter surface. So you have about five inches to put your foot on with your bumper step versus having about 6 1/2 inches with a lot more traction.
So that's gonna be the best benefit as far as adding something like this, even if you have the factory step bumper. Our particular model does not have a hitch, but there are, if you did have a receiver hitch, there are hitch steps that you can add. The main benefit of that is it allows you to step into your bed similar to the TrekStep, however, you lose the functionality of your hitch. This is gonna allow you to still use your hitch, have that receiver tube open, and still have the step at the same time. So you can deploy your step just by stepping down and the spring loaded system assists you pulling it down and retracting it back up so you can keep everything nice and secure underneath your vehicle. You wouldn't wanna ride around with it in the lowered position. You definitely wanna make sure you put it up and, as you see, stow it away. It doesn't add much to underneath the bed of your truck. In general, you wouldn't want that out while riding. However, you'd still have a pretty good amount of clearance underneath it. But just as a rule of thumb, keep it retracted when you're going down the road. And as you see, this is a super easy way to add a additional step to get to your bed or your ladder racks a lot easier without having to lift your leg as high to get to your bumper or having a step stool on hand to use to get into your bed. Again, this has been a look at the Bestop TrekStep, and I'm Ed with etrailer.com. You have a great day.
Ratings & Reviews
It was easy to install and has worked g reat.
Easy install. I ordered the driver side and it is on back order until late October, so I placed another order for the passenger side since it was in stock. Works great and looking forward to getting one for the driver side.
The step works well but collects dirt from the real wheel. It is rather expensive
This step is lightweight aluminum yet rugged. Easy install on my 2020 F250. Makes the step up into the bed easier.
It worked as advertised and has lasted for over 15,000 miles of rough and dirty roads. Also good delivery time. I recomend to anyone who needs help getting up on their truck. Although it could be a little less expensive for what it's made of.
See my review on the drivers side step.
Great product and easily installed
I Installed yesterday & hits tail pipe. I have to reposition tail pipe about an a 1/2 over
My second! I’m sure it will be as good as the first. Quick ship from etrailer.com
Product is as advertised. The instructions were straightforward and easy to follow. My total installation time was less than one hour.
The step works well and wasn't too difficult to install. Some LockTite should be added to make sure that vibrations do not cause some of the screws to loosen.
Seems to be a solid step. Easy to put on, especially with Trailer install video!!!
Works great. Instructions provided incorrect wrench sizes but installation was relatively easy.
The truck step was easy to install, took about 20 minutes. It works as intended. What I don't like about it though is the mechanism is viewable from the side. With a previous step I purchased for a previous truck I owned the mechanism was up in the vender well and wasn't visible.
Still working well on my 2020 2500 Ram, going to order one for my 2023 3500 i bought!
Easy to install and adjustable to allow for the special black package mufflers and body mountings. I put one on each side. They are awesome.
looks and works great. Easy to install. This new 2022 dodge ram 2500 is 2 inch higher than my last truck. This step made a big different in getting both in and out of the bed.
Even though this order was very delayed, customer service kept us updated. This product was fairly easy to install and very helpful when hitching to your RV.
The 2” spacer was missing from the original package. I called customer service and advised them of it. I was ensured that the spacer would be shipped immediately. When I received the new package it only had the bolts for the space, but no spacer. I called again and of course was told it would be mailed. I’m currently waiting for the third package to arrive.
Literature says 4 hours and difficult install but that is not correct. I got steps for both sides and the install was on your back but easy especially with a head lamp. I did not need the shims for my Ram 1500 as the steps retracted nicely just under the bumper.
Great product - just what I needed for my 2017 F250! The instructions label this as "Difficult" and rate the time at 4 hours - Huh? I took a couple of naps in the middle of my installation and it still didn't take 4 hours! Easy install and works great on my truck.
Very happy with this purchase, easy to install and very confortable to use.
Although these steps seem a little expensive, they are well worth the money. They are well made of quality materials and installation was easy. The instructions say 4 hours to install at difficulty level 4, but that must be if you only have one arm. I assembled the entire thing off the truck and then it is only 2 nuts to install on the truck. I used an electric impact gun to remove and re-install the bumper nuts on the truck, easy peasy.
It was a quick and easy install. Works like a champ. Much better than the alternatives available. There is another similar brand out there but I read where the screws mounting the step coul strip out ot the plastic they were screwed into. This step has a very solid mounting system with all metal parts. Easy to use and hides up out of the way. I'm 215 pounds and it feels solid. Over all a beautifully designed piece of equipment.
