Whereas belt-driven fans use up power from the engine to turn, electric fans do not, thus removing any unnecessary load and increasing both fuel economy and horsepower. In addition, you do not have to worry about an electric fan's slowing down at low RPM, as many belt-driven fans do, so you are guaranteed sufficient airflow regardless of the vehicle speed.

Before purchasing an electric fan, be sure to determine the CFM (cubic feet per minute) requirements for your engine. And remember, engines that have been modified or vehicles often used for towing may require additional CFM. There is no limit to the number of fans you can install, as long they all fit appropriately and are mounted on the same side of your radiator so that they do not cancel each other out.

Two types of turn-on sources are available for this fan. The Derale Lighted On/Off Switch for Electric Fans (D16740) allows for manual control of your fan so that you can choose when to turn it on and off. Thermostatic controls, on the other hand, send a signal to the fan, directing it to shut off when fluid temperatures reach an appropriate level, thus saving power. Once the temperature climbs again and additional cooling is needed, the fan is automatically turned back on. Thermostat switches can be single-stage with pre-set temperatures - D16735, D16738, D16739, D16720 and D16721 - or adjustable - D16778 and D16779.

Video Transcript for The Low-Down on the Derale 9" Dyno-Cool Straight-Blade Electric Fan

Today we're going to take a look at the Derale 9-Inch Dyno-Cool straight blade electric fan. This fan will increase your fuel economy, your horsepower, and your torque, and improves the overall performance. Can be mounted on either side of the radiator to be used as either a pusher or a puller, and with no loss of air flow. If you do use it as a puller application, what you would do is use these two wire colors as it is stated upon the label. It says the blue wire would be used as your positive lead, or your power, and the black wire would be your ground. If you do want to install this as a pusher application, you just reverse those connections on the two wires to change the air flow direction. If you can see, it has a very ultra-low profile design for tight applications.

This does come with everything shown here, the full mounting kit and a set of detailed instructions on how to install it. The maximum cubic feet per minute on this is 475. The power draw is only 5.5 amps. I do want to give you a few dimensions on this. The overall width from edge to edge is going to be right at 9 and 9/16.

The overall height from the very bottom to the very top is 10 and 7/16. The depth from the front to the very back here is right at 2 1/4 inches deep. The fan itself is going to be a 9-inch fan, and the depth of the fan is 1 1/4 inches deep. That should do it for the review on the Derale 9-Inch Dyno-Cool straight blade electric fan.

We use these fans in a training mechanism that is used in colleges and vocational schools, they hold up very well under repeated usage.

This fan is for a project that will not be completed until the middle of 2014 or later. I plan to use it to increase the air flow through the air conditioner condenser in my 1969 Corvair convertible. I will be ordering another fan since my design requires two fans for greatest efficiency and the flow rate for these fans is on the low side. The 500 cfm fans comes with too many items that are useless for my application thereby being too expensive.
