If you want shade without hauling around a rack-mounted awning, this one attaches to eyebolts or other anchor points on your roof rack. The 63 sq ft canopy gives you a spot to relax once you park. And it packs into a carry bag when you're done.
If you don't have a rack, round or oval vacuum mounts (MN87FR or MN44FR - sold separately) let you attach to smooth surfaces on your vehicle. That means you can place the awning where it actually works instead of being limited to a fixed location. You can shift the attachment points to move your shade from one side of the rig to the other, giving you more control over your setup than a permanent awning allows. However, if you have a roof rack, you can connect the awning to eyebolts or other secure anchor points. This keeps you from mounting a bulky awning on your rack and leaves that space free for other gear.
The lightweight poles and straightforward connection points turn setup into a simple routine you can repeat at every stop. Once your attachment points are placed and the canopy is taut, clip the carabiners on both corners of the awning to those points. Then, lift the structure up, attach the support poles, and secure it down. This easy process makes a difference when you're moving between trailheads or settling into camp after a day on the road. The system is intuitive enough that one person can get shade up quickly without any issues.
The UV-treated ripstop fabric handles long days under direct sun, and the reflective underside keeps the space beneath it usable in hotter conditions while helping spread lantern light at night. And the aluminum poles are durable without adding unnecessary weight, which helps when you're setting up often or storing the awning between stops. The overall design handles frequent setups and the wear that comes from regular use.
When it's time to pack up, the awning fits into a slim carry bag that sits neatly alongside the rest of your gear. The compact profile works well in van cabinets, overland drawers, or a truck bed toolbox without crowding the essentials you reach for daily. It stays organized between stops and is light enough to grab when you need shade again. For rigs where space matters, the small footprint helps keep the interior layout functional and uncluttered.
The MoonWall (MN74FR - sold separately) gives your MoonShade added protection from low-angle sun and light wind. It attaches to the short side on the awning, creating a more sheltered space when you're setting up next to your vehicle. The panel drops straight down to give you a defined edge you can cook behind, change behind, or use as a wind break. It also folds compactly so you can keep it in the same carry bag as the awning.
If your mounting points sit closer together than standard setups allow, the 7' strut pole (MN84FR - sold separately) creates a stable bar so the awning can attach properly. For roofs with ribs, gutters, or uneven surfaces, the oval-style vacuum mounts (MN44FR - sold separately) help you get consistent contact where the round mounts may struggle. These accessories extend your mounting options and make it easier to create a solid setup on rigs with unique rooflines or tighter anchor spacing.

Hi, everyone, I'm Evangeline here at etrailer. Today, we're taking a look at the MoonShade Original and how it fits here on our 2020 Subaru Outback. The MoonShade Original is actually something that I always like to bring for my different trips because it's so versatile. This is gonna be 9' long by 7' wide, which is a great fit for the Subaru Outback. You also have different mounting options, so here at etrailer, we have a couple kits for you, depending on what you may need. What we have right now is the one that has no anchors, and that's because we already have a platform on this Outback and it doesn't need any extra anchors with that platform.
But if you don't have a platform, or if you want a little bit more options with where you have it mounted, you can get this kit with vacuum anchors here at etrailer. Because of its clip and carabiner design, you can either mount this off of the side of your Outback or off the back, and because of the dome design, you can even open up your hatch door if you wanna put it in that position. This is gonna be a great option for your Outback, no matter where you are parked. Maybe you have a different campsite spot or you're on un-level ground. No big deal.
This can be moved around your vehicle so you can find the best shade and the best place to set up your campsite. What I do recommend when using this with the Outback, though, is to get the tension rod. That's gonna be this rod over here that slides back and forth, so all you need to do is attach it to two anchor points, and from there, the rod gives you a 7' clearance for mounting or setting up your awning. So, if you think, "Oh, well, the platform on my Outback isn't 7' long," well, neither is mine, no big deal. This tension rod creates that base so that you can continue setting this up.
Aside from the tension rod, which you can get separately here at etrailer, this comes with everything that you need to set up your awning. In fact, it's a really windy day here at etrailer, so I'm really glad that this includes guy lines and stakes to make sure that everything stays secure. So, we have our canopy fabric, and that's giving us that 9' distance from the vehicle. But then, we also have our support poles that are doing a great job. These poles are adjustable, depending on what height you do need it.
I do recommend having it about level with where you have it mounted. This can adjust from 70" tall to 96". I have it at its lowest setting right now, and I think that's perfect. The Outback is really built for adventure, and so is the MoonShade awning. Whether you do have your Outback geared up with your platform, your roof rack, everything you needed to mount everything you want for your journeys, or maybe you're a weekend camper and you have all of your gear stored inside your hatch, the MoonShade will fit right into those journeys. My personal recommendation is, if you are using this with your Outback and you don't yet have a roof rack or a platform with anchor points, check out the vacuum cup kit. That's gonna be the MoonShade awning with those anchors. If you already have anchor points, awesome. You don't need any extras. What I do also recommend from using this awning is I always bring my own mallet and stake puller just because you might be going somewhere where it's windy days like this, and you want reliable stakes in the ground keeping everything safe. That's just my personal tips from my own adventures. By the way, the awning packs up into its own bag like this. Everything fits right in here, and that's where you could put your mallet into. And then, all this will sit very easily inside the Outback's spacious cargo area, so you don't have to have a crazy setup to get this onto your vehicle for your adventures. It's simply a matter of getting the awning and focusing on your adventure. And if you have a cool setup, though, where you've gone somewhere pretty cool and you have this off the side or off of the back, I'd love to see it. Send us a picture and a review, and maybe you can inspire other people along the way. Today, though, we focused in on how this MoonShade Original awning fits specifically on the 2020 Subaru Outback. I hope you enjoyed the journey.
