Product DetailFront-Access Doors

We know you can't fit all your travel gear inside of your vehicle, that's why we paired the Reese cargo carrier with our etrailer enclosed cargo cage. This combo is designed to hold everything from heavy generators to nasty, soiled clothes. Unlike other enclosed carriers, you won't have to struggle to lift items above your shoulders, then lower those items in through the top of the carrier. Instead, the front-access doors make loading and unloading easy. Just front-load your gear into the carrier, close the doors, then use the provided lock to secure it all. And, since this enclosed carrier keeps all your gear locked inside, you can make pit stops without worrying about anything getting stolen.

Reese cargo carrier with optional light kit

The Reese cargo carrier keeps your ride street legal with the included light kit. It has oval cutouts where the lights attach, so if your gear blocks the taillights you're still good to go.

Use it as an enclosed carrier or an open carrier

Reese Cargo CarrierReese Cargo Carrier and etrailer Cage

Not every load is the same, but this enclosed carrier cage is built to handle all kinds, big or small, with or without straps. For larger loads like camping gear, sleeping bags, and coolers, you can pack everything in tight, filling the cage so there's no need to strap anything down. But if you don't need to fill the cage completely, just use some straps (sold separately) to keep your gear secure and prevent it from shifting around. Got something too tall for the cage? We've got you covered there too! Just use the provided hex key to remove the two retaining tabs from the back of the carrier, then lift off the top enclosure to turn it into an open cargo carrier. Once loaded, secure your gear with ratchet straps to ensure everything stays in place and nothing gets left behind on the road.

This is LONG overdue! We bought this tray in 2013 for our 2010 Ford Flex (still on the road today!), along with the thick cargo bag that attaches to this tray very easily. We have used this tray EXTENSIVELY over the past 4 yrs., and prior to that for at least one long distance family vacation per year. We also got the rack to install on garage wall, so that we could easily hang the tray in the garage wall, very handy!! For the past 4 years I have been tagging along with my hubby as he has jobsite changes every 3-9 mos. This tray/bag has let me take the items I need very easily all across the country - literally. It has been in FL Summer sun, MN subzero temps, Idaho snow! It allows us to easily open the back liftgate, sometimes you have to pull the top of the bag out of the way if you have packed it full, so ALL is ACCESSIBLE. THIS IS A GREAT INVENTION and you will not be disappointed by its durability!

Very happy with the product and the top-notch service and support from etrailer. The cargo carrier is well-built, looks good, and was easy to assemble. We've traveled over 5,000 miles with it over the past two months. The upward-curved attachment rod is a plus for our low-riding Mazda 3 hatchback; we've only scraped a few times so far and the carrier was unscathed. Good results. Pro tips: get a ratchet strap and secure one side of the carrier to the rear tow hook on your car - this adds great stability (no wobbling); also consider some reflective tape.

Honestly this held up great and was a nice addition to my road trip i took last year, drove from California to Nova Scotia and back and never had any issues. Setup of the carrier itself was great and not to bad to put on the car.

by:

Awesome product! easy to put together and carries so much gear without impacting gas mileage. I got the light kit so I can really load it but it rides so low with my Subaru Outback they're not really needed.

This is great cargo basket: solid and secure, easy assembly, well designed. The angled neck keeps the basket well away from the ground; I haven’t had any problems with it bottoming out. My first use was actually on a trip back from Florida following Powered Paragliding training. I was intending to bring back just a Paramotor (which would have stood vertically inside the basket), but ended up bringing back a whole Trike assembly! Mounted it on the basket as shown, and it rode just fine back through four states. Got a lot of looks on the way home!
I concur with an earlier reviewer that a neat trick is to use a stabilizer strap from the hitch to the corner of the basket. There is plenty of slop in the receiver when the neck is inserted, and a short ratcheting tie down cancels the rattle effectively. I’m very pleased with this purchase; and while I don’t plan to haul around anything as big as that trike, I look forward to many more years of use from it!

Ordered this cargo carrier, extra large bag and light kit. Shipping was extremely fast; arrived in less that 4 days. Easy to assemble, I did however run to my local hardware store and got extra heavy duty washers to be sure all was nice and snug when assembled. The cargo carrier assembly was as easy as described; however no matter how I put in the lights, the plug wire was not long enough. Bought a $4 extender at Walmart. Be sure to put the rubber grommets in first, then put the lens in !!! Packed 3 large suitcases, 2 large duffel bags, smaller bags and still had room!! We did a 800 mile round trip to the beach, ran through some terrible rain storms, but everything stayed bone dry inside the cargo bag. Great product, fast shipping; wish I would have bought this long ago.

I bought this carrier rack as the base unit for a generator box that I installed on the back of my travel trailer. It worked perfectly, and I've been using it for almost a year with no issues other than instant rust on the lower parts of the frame the first time it rained. A can of rust inhibiting spray paint took care of that issue.

I did a ton of online research and chose this model because it actually has a large distance between the hitch receiver and the carrier and I needed it to stick out far enough to clear the spare tire. This model also has about a 4 inch rise between the hitch and the carrier which helps prevent it from dragging on the ground when going over gullies and steep driveways and such. This was the only one I found that didn't sit straight out from the hitch.

The carrier itself is quite robust. It was easy to assemble, and I installed the LED light kit (super easy to install) and added some reflective tape for additional visibility. It is a bit heavy and awkward for one person to install on a vehicle, but I managed to do it and an "anti-rattle" hitch pin (also purchased from etrailer) took care of the sway. I didn't worry about the up and down movement because I bolted a metal box inside to carry 2 portable generators and the weight seems to keep it pretty stable.

I've attached a couple of photos... please note that my trailer is backed up against a 6 inch retaining wall, so the rack is 6 inches closer to the ground than it is when I'm driving.

Solid carrier with plenty of room!Wow, I put this carrier to the test on a 1,600 mile road trip with our 2007 Toyota Highlander and was not disappointed. Plenty of room to store luggage for a family of four plus a load of Christmas presents. We kept everything secure and dry with the etrailer.com 20-cubic foot cargo bag and kept side movement to practically nil with the anti-rattle hitch pin. All around, the whole set up was rock solid and looked great!

I highly recommend the light kit as well. With the cargo bag fully maxed out, the Highlander's taillights were blocked. And since we do a fair amount of driving at night I also added some reflective tape all around the top bar to give not only the sides some visibility, but also the back to get the attention of those not-so-attentive drivers behind me.

Lastly, the kit was easy to put together; it came with spacers but I did not need them to obtain a flush assembly; the separation problem some have reported during assembly was avoided by torquing down the bolts around the nameplates before the main bar bolts, just as others have reported to have worked for them.

Works great for our purpose of holding two heavy electric bikes. Well built and easy to assemble.

by:

The rack is much bigger than my previous one. I was disappointed that it was made in China instead of the USA. It assembled very easily and the light kit works very well. The only draw back is I can no longer open my tailgate with the rack installed due to the spare tire hitting the raised rack.

by:

I purchased this cargo carrier for my 2013 Jeep Wrangler. It came disassembled and following the instructions, I had it set up in less than 30 minutes.

I mounted it to my Jeep's hitch and it sits perfectly. I have over-sized Nitto Terra Grappler tires (305/55/R20).

The goose neck on the carrier clears my rear tire by 4" (see photo).

The Reese cargo carrier and anti-rattle lock both arrived quickly and in perfect condition. My 14 year old son and I put the carrier together in about 15 minutes and installed it on my 2019 Toyota 4Runner. Very happy with the the quality of the carrier. It is very sturdy. We hauled (3) 5-gallon gas containers to the gas station, filled them and returned home without incident. The carrier performed as I hoped it would. This was the first of many jobs I expect this carrier to help with in the future. Although the photo may not show it, the containers were secured with heavy duty bungee cords during during our trip.

First off, etrailer is great. I shopped numerous other sites and they had the best price on his cargo carrier. Second, they kept me in he loop from start to finish and had the cargo carrier delivered on the 3rd business day (maybe it was the 2nd).

The cargo carrier was easy to put together. I haven't used it yet so I can't comment on that but will follow-up once I have.

I do believe I will eventually order an anti wobble hitch pin though. There is quite a bit of play in my 2" receiver but maybe that won't be a factor once I have some weight on it.

by:

This a very nice hitch rack. Well built, lots of space, long hitch tube works very well with Jeep Wrangler JL spare tire, however, you will not be able to open the swing tailgate with the rack on. Its not a big issue as it provides a good amount of clearance to the ground. If you use this carrier with one of the hitch rack cargo bags, it really adds to the cargo capacity of the rack. I have been very happy with this rack, I also like that you can add additional tail/brake lights to the rack.

by:

My 9 year old and I were able to assemble and install this in about an hour. The anti rattle bolt recommended in the video, and the lights, were great additions and I definitely recommend them too. Handled a 900 mile round trip around the northeast and had plenty of room to bring Xmas presents home in the Curt waterproof cargo bag.

I used this product one time for a trip and the bottom broke and came apart. Not only did that happen but the actual cage part was separating from the bottom while driving. I havent used this since and wasted my money. Not a happy customer at all. I wrote emails and contacted you about this and never heard anything in response.

I'm sorry that happened, I'll have our Customer Service folks reach out.

VERY sturdy, fast shipping, easy to put together.

We absolutely live the cargo carrier and trailer. The only complaint we have is with delivery. They tore the box trying to deliver. But.... the product was fine. We love it!

by:

I couldn’t be happier with my experience, they even called to verify my shipping address when they noticed it was different from my home address. I haven’t ever experienced that kind of dedication to customer satisfaction in my life, thank you so much.

So far I'm I'm very pleased with this unit. Assembly was a breeze but I like assembling things. Installed it and load it up to the max and off we went to Oregon for a two week trip. Felt real secure and everything in it was protected from thieves. I highly recommend this unit for that alone but you can also fit alot of cargo in it.

by:

This rack worked great paired with some waterproof totes from Lowes. We did a cross country trip in a van with two rooftop tents and kept extra fuel, water, blankets and clothes safely locked up in the back. It did block our backup camera but we found a solution for that. Occasionally the lights bump out and you have to push them back in place.

I was going to write a detailed review here but we did an entire blog post about the hitch and cargo carrier we bought from etrailer, the experience was fantastic and so were the parts for our build! The full review and how we did the install is at https://shantytravelers.com/hitch-carrier-generator-install/

  • Can the etrailer Cargo Carrier Cage be Folded Up When Not In Use? How Should I Store it?
Hello Sherri. No, the 24x60 Reese Cargo Carrier with etrailer Enclosure Cage for 2" Hitches - Steel - 440 lbs # RP85AR can not be folded up when it is not in use. The cage portion of the unit can be easily removed by loosening the 4 bolts on each side. The cage can be stored upside down in a garage or even a shed to be used as a storage bin when you are not using it to haul stuff behind your car. You could make the unit flat, but you would have to take it apart. I have included a review...

  • Which Hitch Cargo Carrier Does the etrailer Cargo Carrier Cage Fit
Great question, Ramiro! The etrailer Cargo Carrier Cage # e82FV is compatible with any standard hitch cargo carrier that measures 24x60 and has the raised rails running along the outside of it. I recommend the 24x60 Reese Cargo Carrier # 63153 because it has provisions built in for a light kit. We actually have all of this (and a light kit) added together with part # RP85AR so everything you need is in one nice kit. If you check out the linked video you'll see Aiden go over everything...

  • Can Reese Cargo Carrier With Cage Be Used With Swing Away Extender On 2025 Sprinter 3500?
Hey Todd, thanks for reaching out. So the Swagman Swivel Hitch Extender # S86SR will be the best option for this since it has a 300 lb rating compared to 250 lbs with the other swing away extenders. It is possible for this setup with the 24x60 Reese Cargo Carrier with etrailer Enclosure Cage # RP85AR to work on your Sprinter RV, you will just need to keep a close eye on the amount of weight you are carrying. Consider the following: The swing away extender has a 300 lb capacity. This includes...

  • Can 2023 Honda Ridgeline Carry Reese 60x24 Hitch Cargo Carrier
Hello Sue; you can definitely use the Reese 60x24 Hitch Cargo Carrier # 63153 with your 2023 Honda Ridgeline. The only thing you need is a trailer hitch with a 2" receiver. The carrier has a 500 lb capacity but you will likely be limited by the max tongue weight of the hitch so make sure you double check your hitch/vehicle capacity. You also have to account for the 62 lb weight of the carrier itself. What do you plan to use the cargo carrier for? If you want to keep everything secure...

  • How Does Cage of Reese Cargo Carrier and Cage Attach to Base
Hey Mike, so the cage portion of the 24x60 Reese Cargo Carrier with etrailer Enclosure Cage for 2" Hitches # RP85AR that you referenced actually just attaches directly to the railing that runs around the edge of the carrier and does not grab on to the shank of the carrier at all. If you check out the attached assembly video you can see every step of how it all comes together. Let me know if you have any other questions.
