Can I Install A Class 2 Saris Thelma 3-Bike Carrier On My 2016 Sonata With Class 1 Receiver?

Updated 04/28/2025 | Published 04/24/2025

Question:

Hey I have a 2016 Hyundai Sonata. Wanted to attach a Saris Thelma 3 to take me and my niece/nephews bikes. After consulting the local hitch shop they said the only hitch made for my car is a Class 1 hitch but the Saris I bought is a Class 2 hitch. Would it still be possible and safe to get the hitch installed and used my class 2 bike rack with the class 1 hitch?

Hey Noell, the shop is correct that the only hitch receiver that fits your 2016 Hyundai Sonata is going to be a class 1 1-1/4" like Curt # C11402. While the Saris class 2 bike rack may fit if it's the correct 1-1/4" size, it's still not recommended due to weight rating issues. Now if you still wanted to go ahead and do it, you'd be on your own, but you'd probably be fine as long as you're not going over the capacity of the receiver or your vehicle's tongue weight rating, which should be in your owner's manual. This receiver is rated for, 200lbs of tongue weight and your vehicle looks to be rated for 200lbs as well.

If you want an option that will 100% be compatible with class 1 and be warrantied if you have an issue, I'd look at the Swagman Trailhead Bike Rack for 3 Bikes - 1-1/4" and 2" Hitches - Tilting # S63365 which is a really nice option, especially for the price. Also fits 2" hitches in case you ever need to put it on a different vehicle some day.
