Does Dexter Vault System Work the Same As Bearing Buddy

Updated 04/09/2025 | Published 04/08/2025

Question:

Have used beating buddy in past that had a simple rubber cover. Got this trailer recently and want to check grease level and bearings. This black protector is not popping out. Any thought about how to remove it? Or does the whole assembly need to come off? Thanks!

Hey Doug, thanks for the picture of your trailer hub grease cap. From that I can tell you have a Dexter Vault system and not a Bearing Buddy. That black center section does not actually come off at all. It is designed to pop out in case of increased pressure to prevent blowing out the seal. To get the cap off you'll need to use a rubber mallet or a dead blow hammer.

Now the Vault system uses a hybrid grease/oil so it's not exactly maybe what you are used to. I would recommend looking up a video on YouTube that breaks down how these systems work but basically if you pull that cap off it should be basically filled with Vault grease. We have replacement Vault grease with the part # DX94TR. It would need to get pumped into the spindle with a removable zerk fitting, you'd then fill the cap with grease, and then you'd put it all back together.
