Will Yakima SkyBox 21 Roof Box Fit on OEM Volvo Corssbars for a 2024 Volvo XC90

Question:

Hi. I have a 2024 Volvo XC90 and just had Volvo install their factory load bars which Im pretty certain are the Thule WIngbar Evo - still clarifying that with Volvo but Im almost positive thats the load bar model. I also have a Yakima Skybox 21 thats probably 10 years old now. I tried to install the skybox the other day and the clamps dont seem to go all the way around the load bars. Can the clamps on the Skybox be loosened so that they open wider to be able to get around the rails completely - and is that necessary? They get to the edge of the load bars on the back side but I was unable to clamp them down. Thanks a bunch for your help. I really like my skybox and dont want to have to buy a brand new cargo box for my new load bars. Are there Yakima replacement clamps that have a wider opening than my originals? Thanks again.

Hey Tom, thanks for reaching out!

Your Yakima SkyBox 21, part 8007337, will work with crossbars measuring up to 3-1/2" x 1-11/16". You can open up the clamps more up and down, but they don't have a way to be adjusted back and forth to accommodate wider bars than the 3-1/2" mentioned above.

I took a look at the OEM Volvo crossbars, and they are definitely rebranded Thule bars so the clamps should be able to fit.

If you aren't able to fiddle around with them and get them to fit, please let me know and I can help you figure out how we can go about replacing your box. I know replacing your box isn't something on your bucket list this year, but it might be the only option you have.

Hey Tom, how did things go getting your SkyBox 21 to fit on the Volvo load bars? Your update could make it easier for others trying to mount older Yakima boxes on newer Thule-style bars.
