How to Add 5-Way Wiring Connector to a 2024 Toyota Grand Highlander With Factory 4-Way Connector

Question:

I have a 2024 toyota grand highlander with a factory installed tow package which includes a 4 pin connection. My boat trailer has a 5 pin connector. what adapter is available to connect the vehicle 4 pin to the boat trailer 5 pin so that all the trailer lights function correctly? If there is one, is it difficult to install?

Hey Mark, thanks for reaching out!

In order to get your 2024 Toyota Grand Highlander to function with the 5-Way on your trailer you'll need to install the Tow Ready 4 Pole to 5 Pole Trailer Wiring Adapter # 20036. This plugs into your current 4-Way and you splice it into your reverse light function. This comes with a quick-splice connector so once you find the right wire on your Grand Highlander it's a simple matter of clamping it around that wire and the blue individual wire and you'll be good to go!

I believe you meant to say "splice it into your reverse light function".

Also, the right thing to do would be to use a relay

What is the best location to tap into the reverse light in order to have backup lights come illuminated on my trailer? Video is for a 2015 Highlander and would like to know if it still applies to a 2024 Grand Highlander. Already punched the wiring adapter. Thanks.

@DaveK Typically people will tap into the 3rd brake light on the tailgate for a smaller SUV light the Toyota Highlander. I don't have a specific wire that you need to tap into, but you can use a probe-type adapter # PTW2993 to find the correct wire.
