Best Way To Carry 13 Hobie Quest Kayaks On My Thule Roof Rack With 53 WingBar Evo Crossbars

Updated 08/01/2022 | Published 07/29/2022

Question:

I have Thule Wingbar Evo 135 cross bars and I want to carry 2 Hobie Quest 13 ft kayaks which are 28inch wide. It would be better to carry the kayaks hull side down but there is not enough room on the cross bars. I dont mind strapping down the kayaks. I was wondering if the Lockrack can: A. fit on the wingbar evo 135, and B. extend beyond my cross bar ends to support the outer sides of my kayaks.

Your best option would be to get longer crossbars. The Thule WingBar Evo Crossbars - Aluminum - Black - 60" Long - Qty 2, part # TH711520, or silver, part # TH711500, are the next size up in crossbar length. They will only add 3-1/2" of extra length per side. The underside channel of these crossbars is 10" long per side, so your will be well within the range of these longer crossbars fitting on your vehicle. This crossbar will give you 60" of usable crossbar space. This should be enough to strap your Hobie Quest kayaks to your crossbars.

Since your Thule WingBar Evo Crossbars - Aluminum - Black - 53" Long - Qty 2, part # TH711420, are only 53" in length. You may not be able to carry two of the Lockrack Adjustable XL Watersport Carrier - Canoe, Kayak, or 2 SUPs - Side Loading - Universal Mount, part # LR54FR, next to each other on these crossbars. Even when this carrier is in the full retracted position, it is still 28" wide. Two of them side by side are 56" and I cannot guarantee they will fit on your crossbars and not have interference from your Thule feet.

You will be able to install the Lockrack carrier on the longer crossbars without issue, if you want your boats to be more secure on the roof of your vehicle. You will just need to make sure you are not exceeding the maximum weight of your roof rack or the maximum weight of your vehicle.
