Frozen Brake Caliper Troubleshooting on Dexter 12k Axle with Hydraulic Disc Brakes

Published 08/23/2019

Question:

We have a PJ gooseneck with Dexter 12k axles and the hydraulic disks. We are having trouble getting the pistons compressed back in the caliper for install. I was wondering if there is a release valve or something that were missing to get the pressure released. Thanks.

You should be able to compress these back on using a C clamp or a brake rewind tool without much trouble. If they're completely frozen and won't budge using one of those tools, bleeding them completely would be the next potential solution.

If all else fails, and depending on the mileage and the age, it might be time for a replacement. I recommend the Disc Brake Caliper for Dexter 10k and 12k Axles # BP18-045 which comes with the calipers and new pistons. These calipers require the 1/4" Bleed Port # BP18-016
