Modifications and Equipment Necessary to Flat Tow 1999 Pontiac Sunfire
Question:
I thought I recall reading in my daughters 1999 Pontiac Sunfire owners manual that I can tow it with a tow bar and no tranny cooler was needed. Just disconnect the battery, turn ignition to run to unlock sterring and shift auto trans to neutral. Ready to be towed. Is this not so?

According to my research, the 1999 Sunfire with the 4T40E automatic transmission is flat-towable, subject to any recommendations listed in the owners manual. From what I have read, the fuses for the instrument panel lighting need to be pulled to prevent the battery from being drained. The steering column should be unlocked by turning the ignition key to the OFF position, which is the next position from LOCK. The transmission should be in neutral. I would strongly recommend you confirm this with the owners manual and GM.
If the vehicle has the 3T40 transmission, a transmission lube pump (not a transmission cooler) will need to be installed.
If you do not already have base plates for the Sunfire, use part # RM-521448-5, unless you have the GT, in which case you will need part # 175-8.
The Roadmaster Falcon 2, part # RM-520 is our best selling tow bar. You will also need to provide lighting for the Sunfire. For occasional towing, a temporary set-up like the the Optronics Magnetic-Mount Tail Light Kit, part # TL21RK would work well. The kit is quick and easy to set up, and remains independent of the wiring of the towed vehicle. For more frequent towing, a more permanent solution like the Hopkins Tail Light Isolating Diode System, part # 38955 would work better, providing plug and go convenience.
You would also need safety cables, like part # RM-643.
Also keep in mind that most states now require the use of a supplemental braking system, like the Roadmaster Even Brake, part # RM-9400.
