Recommended 14-Ply ST235/85-16 Special Trailer Tires for Jayco Tandem Axle 5th Wheel Trailer

Question:

I’m currently trying to decide on what tires I want to put on my fifth wheel it’s a 43ft Jayco north point that weighs roughly 14000lbs dry double axle right now it currently has 10ply tires but have a lot of wear on the outside now from turning and with past experience with trailers I’ve had I’m wanting to beef it up to a 14 ply so I don’t have to worry as much on long trips but I generally tow it around 68-75 mph and I know most of the 14 ply tires only have a speed rating of 75mph. So what tire would you recommend to use? The size is st235/85r16, it has Rainer 10ply tires on it right now

We can help you with new size ST235/85-16 special trailer tires for your Jayco tandem 5th wheel.

We have four radial tire options in your size, all shown on the page I linked for you. Among these are two choices in a 14-ply-rated Load Range G tire. The one I suggest for you is the Taskmaster Provider # TTWPRG235R16. This tire is rated for 4400-lbs at its rated 110-psi pressure and it has an "M" speed rating too, good to 81-mph. Four of these tires are then good for up to 17,600 total pounds of loaded trailer weight.

The main cause for a trailer tire to fail is heat. Heat comes about from three main sources: incorrect inflation pressure, either too low or too high; from overloading with more weight than the tire can handle; and from driving faster than the tire's rating allows.

Trailer tires should ALWAYS be inflated to the full maximum COLD psi pressure noted on the tire sidewall. Tires do warm up during travel and with changes in ambient temperature but you do not need to worry about compensating for this. So long as your tires have the correct cold pressure at the start of your travel day you're all set.

The highest rated 15" tire we have available is an ST225/75R15 in a Load Range E like the Kenda Karrier # AM10303, which features a maximum load of 2,830 lbs at 80 psi. Assuming you have a tandem axle trailer, this would provide a combined capacity of 11,320 pounds. In order to really provide sufficient support for your 12K trailer, you'll need to upgrade to 16" tires/wheels
