Best Way To Add A Standalone Transmission Cooler To A Classic Car

Question:

Hi, I am running an AOD in classic Mustang, and planning on installing a 8000 D13504 in the front of my condenser. Thus will be my only source of cooling as my radiator does not have provisions for auto trans cooling. Should this be adequate cooling? I will not be towing, and not racing either. If not, would adding a heat sink or long single pass cooler before the front 8000 D13504 suffice? Thank you,

The majority of our transmission coolers are supplemental, meaning they are designed to aid the radiator in cooling the vehicle's transmission fluid. However, I do have a few standalone options that should work just fine to cool your classic mustang's transmission. As a general rule of thumb, you will want to use the largest cooler in the provided space you have available. For a non-remote mounted transmission cooler, the best place to place the cooler is in front of your radiator behind your grill.

For a non remote mounted cooler, the Derale Series 8000 Plate-Fin Transmission Cooler Kit part # D13504 could work for you, however, I recommend using the Derale 25-Row, High-Performance, Stacked-Plate Cooler with -6 AN Fittings part # D52506 in addition to installing a single pass cooler on the frame rail just before the transmission line attaches to the transmission like the Derale 24" Frame Rail Transmission Cooler part # D13225 as this will help to eliminate heat soak as you mentioned.

For a remote mounted transmission cooler, I recommend using the Derale Hyper-Cool Extreme Remote Cooler Assembly part # D15876 in addition to Derale Remote Transmission Filter Kit w/ Temperature Gauge part # D13091 as this will keep your vehicle's transmission fluid at the most opportune temperature.
