How To Ground 2 Wire Trailer Light that Replaces 1 Wire Trailer Light

Updated 05/20/2024 | Published 06/05/2017

Question:

Good afternoon, I am replacing the fenders and marker lights on my trailer. The old markers were fed by one wire. The new lights have two wires, one red and one yellow. Can I ground the light by wrapping it around the 12 oclock screw thats screwed into the trailer wall framing? Thank you and have a great day!

Yes, what you described is exactly how to ground a trailer light that replaces a light that used to ground through the mounting hardware.

Just run the ground wire to the mounting hardware and you'd be good.

I have the same issue with a red and white wire. Is it the white wire I wrap around the screw or red?

@KariS Normally it's the white wire that's the ground so that would be the one to wrap around the screw.
