Question:

Hello, I was wondering how much weight I could place into a caring lagged basket made of aluminium weights about 30 lbs . The distance from the base of the hitch to the furthest point is about 30 inches. Normally my hitch would support a maximum of 200 lbs of tongue weight, but I just want to make sure not to damage the tube of the caring basket. By the way, I want to place a small inflatable boat that weights 110 lbs, and if possible also a small outboard motor that weights 60 lbs. So total weight is about 170 for my stuff + about 30 lbs from the basket itself. Can you please advise? thank you!

Based on what you have described the aluminum carrier should have no problem handling the 200 pound estimated weight of the carrier and boat/motor combined. You will just need to make sure not to exceed the capacity of the trailer hitch on your 2010 Mazda 3. Since you are right at the hitch capacity it would be a good idea to stow the motor in the vehicle it at all possible.

You can reduce the stress on the hitch receiver by also using a stabilization strap such as # 18050, or another strap as long as it does not stretch like bungee cords. I have linked a video that demonstrates on the stabilization strap works. If you have the Curt hitch # C11393, the stabilization strap is required. It is optional for most other brands.
