Are Roof Rack Capacities Listed Per Bar or for Both Crossbars Together

Published 08/06/2015

Question:

Hi, I have a question regarding the capacity of the: Rhino-Rack Roof Rack for Naked Roofs - Vortex Aero Crossbars - Aluminum - Black The specs say 165lbs is the capacity. Is that for an individual rack or both together. If its for both together then an individual could handle 82.5lbs if I only used one? Is that correct? Also, what is the limiting factor? Is it the roof or the rack? You might not know this answer - thats ok.. I have a 2006 Honda Ridgeline with no rack on it. I want to hang long pipe from the back onto the front of this rack. I could use one if its good for 165lbs.

Helpful Expert Reply:

The weight ratings for the roof racks we carry are for both crossbars. The part # RR86YR is rated for 165 lbs when both bars are used and the load is evenly distributed. It would be reasonable to say that each bar has half the capacity of 165 lbs.

You will also need to check the owners manual of your vehicle to determine what the roof capacity is for the vehicle and then be sure to abide by the lower of the two figures as the overall capacity.
