Bearing Protector Recommendations For Pop Up Camper

Question:

I have trailer tires on my pop up camper with little clearance between the dust cap and the side of the trailer there are no cut out for the wheels, the bottom of the camper goes right across the tire, just above the spindle. It is tight enough that the hub cant have studs, but instead the wheel bolts onto the hub. Even at that, when the bolts are all out the rubber part of the tire still fits pretty snugly between the dust cap and bottom of the trailer when pulling it off. Obviously these are going to be longer than my dust caps that are on there. They look like they drive in pretty solidly in order to stay in while going down the road. My question is, how hard, or how do you remove them if needed. Obviously if I get a flat tire Im going to have to remove them, put an old dust cap on that Ill carry, and change the tire. Just curious if its possible to do when youre on the side of the road. Hopefully it wont happen much - Im putting new tires on as well as bearings and races. Oh ya, one more thing, when you put the new bearings in the hub that you are planning on using this, do you manually add grease to the void between the inner and outer bearings before you put the outer bearing in and the nut on? Seems like that would be a lot of space to fill through the grease zerk and bearing to get it filled up enough to move grease into the inner bearing. At least I assume that that void must be full of grease or how else would it push grease to the inner bearing. Any problems with blowing out the grease seal from over doing it? Thanks for the help

We do offer a few of the bearing protectors that have a 1.980 diameter.

With the limited space you have you can take a measurement and see if one of the protectors we offer will work for you. I have attached a link to those you can check out.

The Kodiak Red Eye Bearing Protectors, part # KREB1980AC is 2-3/8 inches, including 3/8 inches that seats in hub
The Bearing Buddy Bearing Protectors, part # BB1980A is 1-13/16 inches, including 5/16 inches that seats in hub. I have attached a photo of these three bearing protectors you can check out. They have the dimensions I mentioned marked on the photo.

All three of these protectors have indicators that help prevent overfilling with grease, and blowing out seals.

When you are putting your bearings and seals in, you should hand pack with grease and not entirely rely on the bearing protector zerk fittings. The protectors are really intended to be used to maintain levels of grease in the system.

I have also attached a helpful article that explains how to replace bearings and seals on a trailer hub.
