Ball Mount Height Setting When Setting Up a Blue Ox Weight Distribution System

Question:
Hello, I purchased the sway pro and did the installation myself and found what I believe are inaccurate set up instructions from Blue ox. Blue Ox says to level your trailer and measure the coupler height then set the ball 1 to 2 inches above the coupler as a starting point when adjusting the sway pro, and when you have it adjusted properly your truck and trailer will be level. Well, there is one problem with that theory, once you raise the ball to a different height it is impossible to have both vehicle and trailer return to there level positions. You might be able to level your trailer but your tow vehicle will always be off the one to two inches that you raised the ball. The same principal applies to two teeter totters, if they are on the same plane they can be leveled if you raise or lower one, level can never be achieved. I understand if you put the coupler and the ball at the same height the spring bars are not strong enough to level your trailer, thats why Blue ox wants you to have the ball one to two inches above the coupler to compensate the difference. So when adjusting this hitch, dont pull your hair out for hours following their inaccurate instructions, you can level your trailer but your tow vehicle will always be off the difference you raised the ball. When I contacted Blue ox I spoke to Marty in customer care and his response was, inch why are you calling us. And my response was, so you can correct your misleading and inaccurate installation instructions and save your customers a headache. And yes I own all the different sizes of spring bars for varying tongue weights and I own a tongue weight scale for you guys thinking Im using the wrong size bars. Hope this helps others out when setting up the sway pro.

The reason you go with a ball mount height that is 1 or 2 inches above level as the starting point is that because once you put the tongue weight of the trailer onto the tow vehicle's suspension it will compress slightly and once that happens the trailer will then sit level.
If the spring tension is correct (meaning you used the correct spring bars and they are setup right) the vehicle will sit level (and lower) when the trailer's tongue weight is on the vehicle. Because of that you go with a ball mount setting slightly higher to compensate for the compression, this way the trailer will also sit level when hooked up.
