It looks like you're wanting to install a 7-way on your vehicle, is that correct? If your truck was equipped with the factory 7-way, and you're wanting to replace it, you'd just unplug the harness from the rear of the connector, and replace it with a 7-way like part # HM40975.
If your Dakota doesn't have a trailer connector, you'd first install a 4-pole like part # 118329. How you'd proceed from here will depend on how your trailer's equipped. If your trailer doesn't have electric brakes, you can simply use an adapter like part # 37185 to convert the 4-pole you just installed into a 7-way. However, if your trailer has electric brakes, you'll need to install a brake controller.
If you don't already have a controller, the Tekonsha Prodigy P2, part # 90885 would be an excellent choice. The controller is very easy to set up and use. You'd need our brake controller install kit, part # ETBC7, which includes the adapter I mentioned above. The kit also includes all the wire, circuit breakers and hardware you'll need.
I've linked you to the installation instructions for the # ETBC7, as well as to an install video showing the kit being used on a newer Dakota. The procedure on your vehicle will be similar.
