Brake Controller Installation on 2010 Ford Escape

Updated 10/23/2014 | Published 10/21/2014

Question:

My 2010 Ford Escape has a tow package with 4 pole connector and I need to adapt this to a Bargman 6 spades with 1 center pin plug for towing an RV with electric brakes. Can you tell me what components I need to buy from you guys and is there a video showing the installation? My assumption is that the Bargman plug connects to the existing connector via an adapter of some sort and then I have to run a wire for the electric brakes. Is that correct? Thanks.

It sounds like you have a pretty good handle on what you need.

I'd recommend you begin by choosing a brake controller. I'd recommend a proportional controller like the Tekonsha Prodigy P2, part # 90885. A proportional controller has internal sensors that can determine how quickly the tow vehicle is braking, and then send the proper amount of voltage to the trailer brakes so that the vehicle and the trailer brake at the same rate. This leads to safer, more predictable braking. To install the controller, you'd use our brake controller install kit, part # 90885. The kit contains an adapter that would convert your existing 4-pole into a 7-way trailer connector (6 spades or blades with 1 center pin). The kit also includes all the necessary wire, hardware and circuit breakers you'll need to complete the installation.

I've linked you to an install video showing a brake controller install on a 2011 Escape, as well to full instructions for the installation kit.
