How to Make a 6-Way Round to 4-Way Round Trailer Connector Adapter

Published 10/15/2014

Question:

I have a cord with two female 4 pin round ends. The new vehicle came with a 6-pin round outlet male. Ive searched the web for an adapter to turn the 6-pin male round into a 4-pin male round with no luck. Does such an adapter exist?

There isn't a 6-Way round to 4-Way round adapter that we carry but we have the parts to make one.

First, a 6-Way is not very common, make sure it is a 6-Way, like # PK11609, and not a 7-Way blade style like # PK11893.

If it is a 6-Way round then to make an adapter you would first need a 6-Way round trailer side connector, # PK11604. Then you would need a 4-Way round vehicle end connector, # PK11410. Then all you would need is about 1 foot of bonded 4-wire, # 16-4B-1. You would just need to insert the wires into the back of each connector according to how the vehicle side 6-Way is wired and for what your trailer requires (since there isn't a standard for a 4-Way round).

On the wire, use green for right turn/brake lights, yellow for right turn/brake lights, brown for running lights, and white for ground.

Or, for something that would likely be easier, you could replace the 4-Way round on the trailer with a 6-Way round trailer side connector such as # H20036 and not worry about adapters. On this 6-Way, white is ground, brown is running lights, green is right turn/brake, yellow is left turn/brake, red is output for trailer brakes, and black is 12 volt power. Any function you do not need you can just cap off with a wire nut.
