Weight Distribution and Pole Tongue Adapter Recommendation for Boat and Trailer Weighing 8,800 lbs

Published 10/07/2014

Question:

Sequioa requires a weight distributing hitch above 5,000 lb GTW. My trailer with boat is 8,800. Will such a hitch mount to a boat trailer given that the rails are a few feet back from the coupler?

Since it sounds like you have a pole tongue on your trailer you would need a pole tongue adapter like part # RP58393.

The best way to pick out a weight distribution system is to base it off of the loaded tongue weight of the setup when it is loaded and ready to tow. This figure also includes the weight of any cargo behind the rear axle of the tow vehicle. I attached an FAQ on determining tongue weight for you to check out as well.

Typically tongue weight is 10-15 percent of the total trailer weight. Since your boat and trailer weigh 8,800 lbs your tongue weight range will be between 900 and 1,200 lbs. For a great system I would recommend the part # RP66560 to fit this range. I attached a review video for this system for you to check out as well.

Lastly you will want to confirm that your Sequioa has the capacity to tow a trailer that weighs as much as yours.
