Hi Richard!
With your bed being 40" from the ground, you technically could get away with a 4 step option, but having 5 steps is going to be a lot more comfortable to walk up and down, so that's what I'm going to recommend. Specifically something like the TorkLift SmartStep GlowStep Revolution Uprising - 5 Step - 30" Wide - RV Entry Steps # TL47QV.
These have been a very popular options for people with truck bed campers as they are easy to deploy and store, they are American made, the install and set up is on the easier side, and they have 325 pounds of capacity. They are an extremely good option. The only thing to note is that these ones are specifically for a 30" wide door frame flange, so let me know if yours is more narrow than that so I can find a better set for you.
Another somewhat more budget option is the Brophy Camper Scissor Steps - 5 Steps - Aluminum - Non-Slip Tread - 24" Wide - 300 lbs # AS25. These are also American made and pretty easy to install, deploy, store, and set up, but they are rated to 300 pounds and just aren't quite as sturdy as the TorkLift steps. Oh and these will fit a 24" wide door frame, so they are also more narrow.
What kind of camper are carrying in your truck?
