What Brake Controller do I Need for My 2013 Honda Pilot with Tow Package?

Updated 10/26/2026 | Published 10/25/2026

Question:

Looking for a brake controller for my 2013 honda pilot exl. Its currently wired with a round 6 blade plug with a center pole. Im towing either a small camper trailer or a 16 foot flatbed trailer, both under 3500 lbs. Whats my best option Thanks Geoff

Hello Geoff,

Thanks for writing in!

For your 2013 Honda Pilot EX-L, I recommend the Curt TriFlex NEXT Trailer Brake Controller # C45GV. Since you already have the factory 7-way connector, we're going to go with the factory tow package setup. This kit comes with the vehicle-specific wiring harness (please see attached image), making installation much easier. You will just need to locate the factory brake controller connector under your dash, plug in the harness, and mount the controller somewhere that's easy to reach while driving.

You mentioned having six blades around the outside and one pin in the center. That's actually a 7-way connector, so you're all set there!

The TriFlex NEXT is a proportional brake controller, meaning it applies your trailer brakes based on how hard you're braking in your Pilot. I really like this style of controller because it gives you smoother, more controlled stops.

What kind of small camper do you have, and what has been your greatest adventure in it?
