2-1/2" Hitch Receiver Extension that Reduces to 2" Receiver

Updated 10/28/2026 | Published 10/24/2026

Question:

What is the outside width? Will this tube fit inside a 2.5” receiver? I have a 2.5” receiver that I’m hoping this will fit into to extend my hitch and reduce it to a 2” receiver.

Hey Lucas!

I measured the Buyers Products Weld-On Receiver Tube # 337RT25824B in our warehouse using my digital caliper, and it has an exact outer diameter of 2.54", so I don't believe it will work with your truck's 2-1/2" receiver. Even in the case that it would fit, I don't think that I'd recommend it for the way you're wanting to use it. Because the tube is meant to be welded onto the frame, I don't think it'd be a safe idea to put any extensive weight into or onto the tube.

Instead, the Curt Hitch Extension and Reducer # C45048 is built for exactly what you're wanting to do. It's made to fit into your 2-1/2" receiver, extend the receiver by 34" or 24" if you cut it down, and reduce the receiver down to 2". It can support a trailer weighing up to 6,000 lbs and tongue mounted accessories up to 600 lbs, though you'll want to stick with the specifications in your truck's owner's manual.

You'll want to also have one or two Curt Cam Buckle Stabilizing Straps # 18050 to stabilize the hitch extender when it's carrying weight. The extension includes a pin and clip, but if you need a lock, you can go with our etrailer Trailer Hitch Receiver Lock # e98880 on the 2" side and etrailer Hitch Receiver Lock # e98881 on the 2-1/2" side for extra security.

Are you needing the extension because you have an in-bed camper or is there something special you're planning?

This is exactly what I used to extend my hitch from underneath a camper overhang. I welded an oval loop to the top of it for my safety chains. Also added a mount for the trailer lights plug to the top of it, and made an extension to run the wires from the bumper socket to the top of the hitch extender. Works great for towing my boat when the camper is on the truck.

@MarkT I like those modifications! I haven't thought about that before, but that'll definitely keep you legal and safe on the road. Thanks for the tips!
