Weight Distribution Hitch for 7,500 lb Travel Trailer

Updated 10/26/2026 | Published 10/23/2026

Question:

I have a 30 ft travel trailer. Loaded about 7500 lbs. Pull with f250 turbo diesel. Looking for a new hitch. Would the equalizer 14000 4-p hitch be a good choice ?

Hi Lee! I recommend the Equal-i-zer Weight Distribution Hitch # EQ37120ET for your 30' travel trailer. With a loaded trailer weight of 7,500 lbs, your tongue weight will typically fall between 750 and 1,125 lbs, making the 12k system a better match than the 14k.

The # EQ37120ET has a tongue weight range of 800 to 1,200 lbs. You're potentially right between systems for tongue weight, so it wouldn't be a bad idea to actually measure it with a scale like # BTBRV27FR just to be sure. It is also important to remember that tongue weight includes anything you're carrying behind the rear axle in your F-250.

What kind of travel trailer are you towing?

Crossroads sunset trail 30rks. I have been pulling with a 29 year old Reese with chains on the trunnion bars. I get a little sway even though it is setup correctly. I have read chain style hitches allow sway. I have also heard that the equalizer hitch is loud because of the steel to steel friction bars. Are they ? I have a heavy duty 2-1/2"shank for my truck so I don't need a shank. Is the 12,000 lb available without a shank ? From a sway perspective, are chain or friction bars the best choice ? Sorry for so many questions, just want to make sure what to buy.

@LeeC no worries, this isn't a small investment so you want to make sure you get it right! The Equal-i-zer # EQ37121ET is the version without the shank, so that will save you some money. There is some noise associated with these systems because of the steel-on-steel friction, especially when turning. I don't think it's too terrible, but everyone has a different tolerance for noise. As far as sway control goes, I prefer the integrated friction style systems like the Equal-i-zer over traditional chain-style weight distribution hitches, especially at this price point. The 4-point sway control will be a nice upgrade over your older Reese setup.

Just curious....why is the 12,000 no shank more expensive than the 14,000 no shank ?

@Lee pricing varies between the different models based on manufacturer costs and our pricing system, so the 14K can sometimes end up costing less than the 12K. I don't have any control over that, but I would still stick with the 12K system since it's a better match for your trailer's weight.
