Can I Replace a Magnum MM1212 with a 2,000 Watt Go Power Inverter?

Question:

2017 Tiffin Open Road 32SA. Looking into replacing my Magnum MM1212 1200watt with aGO power 2000watt inverter/charger. With the increase in amperage, would the wiring to and from the unit utilize the same wiring as the Magnum MM1212? What would the model number be? Thank you, Joaquin

Hey Joaquin, thanks for reaching out. For your 2017 Tiffin Open Road 32SA, I recommend the Go Power Smart Pure Sine Wave Inverter # GP72QR. It gives you 2,000 watts of clean pure sine wave power, which is a nice jump from the 1,200-watt Magnum MM1212 and gives you a lot more room for higher-draw appliances. One important difference is that the # GP72QR is an inverter only, not an inverter/charger, so you’ll need to retain or add a separate battery charger/converter for charging the house batteries.

The important part is that I would not plan on reusing the existing Magnum battery cables without verifying their size. Magnum calls for a minimum #1 AWG DC cable and 175-amp protection for the MM1212, while Go Power calls for 2/0 AWG cable with a 300-amp Class-T fuse for a short run on the # GP72QR. The Go Power can pull substantially more DC current at full inverter load, so upgrading the battery cables and fuse is part of doing this conversion correctly. The existing AC wiring may be reusable depending on how Tiffin wired the Magnum, but that also needs to match Go Power’s installation requirements.

What 120V gear do you most want to power in your Tiffin off-grid?
