Will 3-Leaf Double-Eye Spring Powder Coat Crack When Spring Flexes

Question:

Does the powder coat crack when the spring flexes under load? Is there a self-healing wax or other anti corrosion coating that can be used instead of it in addition to powder coat?

Hey Mark! The powder coat on the EMCO 3-Leaf Double-Eye Spring # EM46RB is designed to flex with the spring, so it won't crack under normal use. It may eventually wear where the leaves rub together, but it will provide better corrosion protection than a standard painted spring. If you really want to, you can apply a flexible corrosion inhibitor over the powder coat for additional protection.

It's a 2021 single axle pontoon trailer and we usually launch in salt or brackish water. OEM springs are already flaking apart. I'm thinking about spraying a rubberized anti corrosion paint once the new springs are loaded, so the rubber bonds setup at the "neutral" position and get the minimum possible stretch with each bounce if that makes sense. I've heard of wax-based coatings that self-heal, but it seems like I'd have to reapply regularly.

@MarkN that makes sense, especially with regular saltwater exposure. A rubberized corrosion coating applied with the springs loaded should give you some additional protection, particularly anywhere the powder coat eventually wears. I would still rinse the springs with fresh water after launching whenever possible since saltwater is going to be tough on any coating over time.
