Question:

Hello, trying to decide between the Montague Paratrooper pro 16” or 18”small vs medium. I’m 5’7” with inseam of 28.75”. I see stand over height on medium is 29.5 and small at 28.5. The manufacturer recommended height I’m at medium but concerned with stand over height. Help…. Would I be able to fit on the small?

Hi Stanley,

Great question, and I can see why you’re stuck between the two because you’re right in that in-between zone where both technically “fit” on paper. I recommend going with the small part # PROBLK16. I reached out to Paratrooper and they agree the 16" is safer and more comfortable for your in seam.

The small (16") PROBLK16 has a 28.5" standover, which lines up much better with your inseam and gives you a little bit of clearance, which is what you want for confidence and comfort. You can always raise the seat to get proper leg extension while pedaling, so you’re not losing fit there, but you can’t really fix a standover that’s too tall.

The medium Paratrooper part # PROBLK18 has a 29.5" standover, which is actually a bit higher than your inseam, so you’d likely be right on the top tube or not have that comfortable clearance when standing over the bike. That can feel awkward, especially off-road when you need to hop on and off or put a foot down quickly.

So between the two, the small is the safer and more comfortable choice for your measurements, especially if you plan on trail riding or anything where footing matters.

Where do you plan on riding? Rocky trails or city riding?
