Replacement Black Water Valve That's Leaking - 1977 Silverstreak RV Trailer

Question:

Hi, I have a 1977 Silverstreak trailer and the black water valve on the right in photo is leaking. Whats my best bet to repair or replace?

Hello Tom!

That's not fun at all, sorry about the trouble you're having. It's a bit hard to tell in the pics, but it looks like you would need Valterra Bladex Waste Valve for RV Black Water Tank - 3" Hub to 3" Spigot # T40. This will work if you have 3" diameter tube on each side. You could cut the old one out, install this one, seal it up, and you're good to go and back on the road.

If this doesn't look right, or you instead want a cable operated one instead of the pull handle, let me know and I'm happy to dig more into it!

I looked up that trailer; it's super neat! Where are you taking it next? Or is it parked permanently?

Thank you Andrew! My concern is the old valve is cemented into the Y shaped pipe so if I cut it there I'm going to have a cemented in stub of 3" pipe still in the Y shaped pipe - so how would I cement the new one in? I worry it won't slide into the Y shaped pipe because the old stub is still cemented in there. And a Fernco 3" rubber coupling might not fit over the Y shaped pipe end because it's wider there than a regular 3" pipe. (you can see that in the photo - it's wider at the end of the Y shaped pipe so that a 3" pipe can slide in. Do you think I have to get a whole new Y shaped pipe and cut out the grey water valve as well? To answer your other question, I am living in the Silverstreak on my lot in Altadena CA where my house burned down in the fires last year. I am rebuilding my house and living in the trailer while I do. I appreciate your help on this problem!

@TomS Thanks for the added info. So a lot of newer RVs have a simple bolt on install, but on this one it's cemented in obviously so it changes things a bit. Some people can just cut out the old one and cement in a new one. You may have better luck just replacing the entire Y pipe with dual valves like with the LaSalle Bristol Double RV Waste Valves - Elbow - Rotating - 3" Hubs # 34466NDHR19AAA and then use some various adapters and pieces like Valterra RV Sewer Nipple - 3" MPT to 3" Spigot - 4" Long # T3524 and Valterra Coupling for RV Sewer System - for 3" pipe # F02-2103 and Valterra DWV Coupling for RV Sewer System - ABS Plastic - for 3" pipe # D50-2935. Then Valterra RV Sewer Termination Adapter - 3" Lug Fitting to 3" Hub # T1029-2 would go on the outlet to attach your orange tube in the pic. You'll want cement # A05-0303 too. Sorry I don't have a more exact solution. It sometimes takes a bit of finessing and working with various pieces and trips to local stores to find the right adapters etc. If you want to send another pic or two to my email then I can try to see if there's more exact parts I can give you.
