Hi Bill!
That is a very good question. I couldn't find that referenced in the instructions for any other brand of running boards for your 2026 Ford Explorer. The only thing I found that was close was the rocker panel having a plastic covering that needed to be unclipped. This allows the HTC inserts to install easier. It doesn't look like all models of Explorer have this covering though and none of the installs we have done did either.
That said, it does not look like this is a 100% necessary thing to do. If you look at the included snip from the instructions for the Romik RB2 Running Boards w/ Custom Install Kit - 6" Wide - Black - Aluminum # RMK47FR, you can see an example of just prying that cover out of the way while the bolts are put in and tightened down. I think this is all you are going to have to do.
Do you know which trim level you have on your Explorer? I should be able to find out more if I knew that part.

Thanks for your help. I talked with a installer and he said the trimming is on the brackets if you want the running board to fit higher and more flush with the rocker panel. It is not required on standard installation. I have an Explorer ST-L Line with Street Pack package. Thanks for your help.
