What Brake Controller and Trailer Wiring do I Need for My 2006 Ford F-250 XLT?

Updated 01/08/2026 | Published 12/25/2025

Question:

Hi! Weve got a 2006 f250 6.0 XLT. It has an old much older than the truck aftermarket brake controller and wiring I believe for 7 pin style installed by the previous owner but none of it is functional or factory, the wiring is an absolute mess and it looks like its been cut under the hood. We want to remove all that mess and do a clean install that has a brake controller and can seamlessly switch from hauling our small 4 pin pop up and trailer to his brothers big dual axle equipment trailer or buying a bigger camper without having to worry about adapters. Wired would be his preference, he already fights the Bluetooth for the stereo. I saw Curt c56032 and I think that will get us back up to 4 pin but Im not sure where we go from there?

Hello Anna,

Happy to get the great wiring fiasco of 2025 sorted out! It sounds like you’re ready for out with the old and in with the new, and this is the cleanest way to do it while completely bypassing the hacked up wiring that’s currently on the truck.

You’ll want to start by installing the Curt T-Connector Vehicle Wiring Harness with 4-Pole Flat Trailer Connector # C56032. This gets you back to a known good starting point and will handle the trailer turn signals, brake lights, and running lights.

From there, you’ll build on the # C56032 by installing the Universal Installation Kit for Trailer Brake Controller - 7-Way RV and 4-Way Flat - 10 Gauge Wires # ETBC7. You will need to run a brake wire from the front to the rear 7 way, and a power line from your battery with a couple of amps under the hood.

For a brake controller, I’d go with the Tekonsha BRAKE-EVN Trailer Brake Controller w/ Custom Harness - 1 to 4 Axles - Proportional # TK23BR. It’s a solid wired option that gets the job done and can handle electric brakes on trailers with up to four axles. If any of the trailers use electric over hydraulic brakes, you’ll want to step up to the Tekonsha Prodigy P3 # TK36UR instead. Great thing about both of these brake controllers is that they will come with the vehicle specific pigtail for a very easy install.

Have you been able to check whether the brake wire running to the rear of the truck is still intact?

I already had the factory installed 4 pin when I started. Then I wired one wire between the battery with an inline fuse to the hothwire pin on the 7 pin connector. . We had an old cell phone that wasn't being used. The Curtis Bluetooth brake controller plugs into the 7 pin connector directly to the camper plug. The old cellphone's software and Bluetooth is dedicated to use only for breaking, not for anything else. It stays on and the software has an emergency button if you needed to override the brakes. I have had no problems with this configuration.

@Gaewfarang Thanks for the response Gaewfarang! That is a great idea about using an old cell phone, we all have one of 2 of those lying around. May 2026 bring your greatest adventures yet!

Currently all lights for the truck side work, when we bought the truck it had a 7 pin connector hanging loose under the truck and an older style electronic control mounted under the dash in the cab. We connected it to his brother's trailer to test connections and got no trailer lights at all and no power to the brake controller. We found no 4 pin connection at all. We found cut wires not capped off running to the rear of the truck and the same under the hood. Four of those have been identified as the factory upfitter switch wires (we don't have that option) and we capped all other wires and removed the dangling 7 pin for safety.

@Anna In that case, I would install the Curt T-Connector Vehicle Wiring Harness with 4-Pole Flat Trailer Connector # C56032 and then build on top of that with a kit we put together here, the Universal Installation Kit for Trailer Brake Controller, 7-Way RV and 4-Way Flat, 10 Gauge Wires # ETBC7. The reason I am switching from # 37185 to # ETBC7 is because it sounds like the install is going to be a bit more involved since the original wiring has been cut and is missing. The # C56032 will give you a working 4-way at the back of the vehicle, and from there you will build on top of it with the # ETBC7. This means running a power wire from the battery with a couple of fuses under the hood, and also running the brake wire from the front of the vehicle to the rear (all of these parts are included in the kit of course). Just be sure to route the power wire and brake wire cleanly under the truck, keeping them away from moving parts. And honestly, you can never have too many zip ties. It does take some time, but like I always say, if I can do it, anyone can =) I didn't have an install on a F-250, but attached one on an Explorer so you can see what all it entails. If you have any questions, please ask away, that is what I am here for.
