How Can I Get a 3" Gooseneck Ball on My 2024 Ram 5500 Rated for 40,000 Pounds?

Updated 11/25/2025 | Published 11/23/2025

Question:

Hey folks, Im looking for a gooseneck plate for a 2024 Ram 5500. I need to be able to pull a 40k with a 3 ball, but being able to change out for a smaller standard 2 5/16 would be really really nice. Unless theres a capable adapter to go from 3 to 2 5/16. Open to suggestions, thank you!

Hello Jason,

I have a solution for you, but I don’t know of any hitch plates that allow you to change out the ball.

You’ll want to go with the B&W Turnoverball Underbed Gooseneck Trailer Hitch for Flatbed Trucks # BWGNRK1500. When you look at the product page, you’ll see it’s rated for 30K, that’s just the ball rating. My contact at B&W confirmed that the overall weight capacity depends on the fabrication, so make sure you have a great welder do the job to ensure it can handle the 40K you need.

You can then swap out the 2 5/16" ball for the 3" B&W gooseneck ball # BWGNXA2025, which is rated for 40K. I also added an install picture that shows an example done on a frame instead of a flatbed.

What kind of trailer are you hauling that’s 40K? Heavy equipment for work?

Hi Kate, thanks for this! Any gooseneck rated for 40k will be a 3" ball. Starting up a hotshot business, and I want to be able to maximize the weight I can handle. Also, I think it's generally better to have more capacity and not use it, than to run close to the actual ratings. It gives a sort of safety buffer. Thanks again!

@JasonH My pleasure Jason! I would like to also mention that you cannot go wrong with the B&W brand, I feel confident recommending their parts because they are great quality, made here in the US, and they are just a fantastic company that will take care of you for life. Yes, always better to be rated for higher and not need it. Good luck on your new business adventure! If you ever have any questions in the future, you know where to find us. Have a Great Turkey Day!!
