Does Install of Brake Controller on 2023 BMW X3 Require Trip to Dealer

Updated 12/01/2025 | Published 11/11/2025

Question:

Do I also need to buy the BMW brake module if I want to use a trailer with brake hookup? I also read on some forums that the software in the BMW needs an update to recognize it.

Hey TJ, we can help you install a brake controller in your 2023 BMW X3 and it won't require any trips to the dealer but you will need to start with a 4-way like the part # TK54ZR if you do not have one already.

Then you would need to convert that to a 7-way with the part # ETBC7 so that you can wire in a brake controller like the Redarc Tow Pro Liberty # RED52VR which his my favorite option since it only puts a small knob on the dash of the car. What are you planning on towing?

Hey TJ, how did things go with adding the 4-way and converting it to a 7-way on your X3? Your update could make it easier for others setting up a brake controller on their BMW.

I actually borrowed a truck for that weekend so I didn't need the hookup. I plan to install the OEM AAG module as it is incorporated into the BMW display and integrates with the Camera etc.. It's a bit more involved as you essentially modify/flash the car's registry, which is what a dealer would do. To my knowledge this is just a light module so perhaps the converter to pin out brakes is still needed. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HET0KPY3FVE https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CJQ49D4w_SE https://www.bimmerworld.com/railer-Lighting-Control-Unit-BMW-U11-X1-G45-X3-G05-X5-G06-X6m-G07-X7.html
