Recommended Suspension Enhancement for a 2001 Jeep Cherokee XJ w/ a Lift

Updated 09/14/2025 | Published 06/15/2025

Question:

Greetings, I have a 2001 Jeep Cherokee XJ with a 4.75” lift. I am looking for a solution to calm down the “porpoising” that occurs when I hit a bump. I also need better handling when towing. What is the best solution for my setup?

Hey Harry. The only suspension enhancement option I have for your lifted 2001 Jeep Cherokee XJ are the SumoSprings Solo Custom Helper Springs for Jeep item # SSR-403-40. These will work so long as the lift in the rear of your Jeep is 4" or less. These have a 1,000 lbs capacity and will support your rear end when you're hauling a heavy load or towing a trailer. If your rear suspension is flexing that much while you're doing your daily driving it will help with that too.

Another option to add support when towing is to use a weight distribution system. I would just need to know your trailer's total weight when loaded.

How tall is your Jeep's lift in the rear? You can add this information and any other questions you have where it says Reply to Jerred H and I'll be happy to answer them.

Hey Harry, did you find a solution to the "porpoising" issue with your Jeep? I'm curious to know if the SumoSprings or a weight distribution system helped improve your handling and towing experience. Your feedback could really help others with similar setups.

@HarryM We've got a couple of those. The Front item # HE23YR by Hellwig is adjustable and designed for Jeep's with a 3" - 5" lift. You'll want the Hellwig Anti-Sway Bar item # HE46MR for the rear.
