How to Find the Right Trailer Boat Winch for a 16' Aluminum Boat

Updated 05/08/2025 | Published 05/04/2025

Question:

Im looking for a boat wench that makes cranking my 16 5 Side console aluminum boat with 40 HP motor easier to load on a bunk style trailer. Electric wench is not an option. Thanks

Thanks for reaching out to us, Dennis!

Do you currently have a winch on your boat trailer, or are you looking to add one from scratch?

I see you were looking at the Curt 2-Speed Boat Trailer Winch # C75ZJ rated for 2,600 lbs - is that at or around the weight of your boat?

If you can give me some more specifics I'd be more than happy to help you enjoy your boating trips without dreading loading and unloading your boat!

Yes, my trailer winch is bolted onto a welded plate that measures 4" in width and 4 3/4 " in length. The present winch is rated for 600 lbs. The winch is bolted to the plate with 1 hole in the front and 1 hole in the back. The weight of my boat is 660 lbs. with bunks on the trailer. Is there a winch that will fit on the plate to make it easier to load the boat? Thanks Dennis

@Dennis Thanks for the extra insight! I recommend checking out the Fulton Single Speed Trailer Winch # F142102. The base isn't an exact 1:1 ratio to your welded plate, but it does have a bolt pattern that can match with it and it has a 1,100 lb weight rating so it will be more than strong enough for your boat. Let me know if you have any other questions!
