Why Do Some Hitches have Higher Towing Capacities with Weight Distribution
Updated 10/30/2025 | Published 02/12/2025 >
Question:
Hello, I am interested in purchasing a trailer hitch for my 2006 crown victoria. I noticed in the description of the product it says a max gross trailer weight of 4000 lbs, or 6000 lbs when used with weight distribution. What is the difference between with and without weight distribution? Is their separate kit for this upgrade? Thanks in advance.

Hey Trent, so weight distribution systems are kind of hard to describe but basically what they do is they use spring bar tension from the trailer frame and vehicle hitch to distribute some of the tongue weight up to the front axle of the tow vehicle which allows there to be less stress on the hitch and can allow for higher towing capacities. I attached a help article with more info on them as well but let me know if you have any other questions about them.
